I've heard that some variants of the Skyraider could carry a dozen soldiers, but it seems really difficult to get good pics of the fuselage interior. It's a BIG bird so it seems plausible. |

Quoted: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6b/F6F-5_HVAR_NOTS_NAN4-2-45.jpg F6F (specifically the F6F-5) Hellcat. Broke the back of Japanese combat aviation in the Pacific. Also displaced a bunch of dive bombers off carriers because, hey presto, it could do their job too, and tackle the fighters afterward. View Quote The Hellcat was robbed of it's due respect and glory by historians announcing that Japan could never recover from the loss of pilots at Midway. The arrival of the Hellcat followed right on the heels of Midway and ever since it's dominance has been written off as going against inferior pilots. At Midway the Japanese did lose 248 aircraft but only 110 pilots. 74 shot out of the sky and 36 in attacks on the carriers. If we go by the law of averages which had Japanese naval airgroups divided in equal thirds between fighter, torpedo bomber, and dive bomber then we can estimate somewhere around 40 fighter pilots we're lost. That's not an evisceration of their fighter pilots. In addition none of the losses involved land based fighters and Japan's land based fighter pilots had years of experience fighting over China. It's true that Midway ended Japan's ability to project power with it's carriers but for the next year when it's planes took to the skies they were still being flown by some of the most experienced pilots in the world. The next engagement after Midway was Truk lagoon and the Hellcats absolutely curb stomped the land based Zeros and Oscars they met. (Oscar's were better dogfighters than the Zero) Watch and read interviews of our surviving pilots from Truk and they describe very skilled adversaries they faced. The Hellcat was just superior. |
