Wolf Steel availability for 6.5 Grendel and this 9x39 pretty much pushes my desire for a 300blk back behind the back burner.

I'm tempted by that 12.5" Wolf upper if it comes in 9x39 --- or do you think a non-piston would be better in case I eventually suppress it?

All kinds of things.  The primary drawback is that you can't use 5.56 mags/bolts/cut down brass.

What they need to do is market a something short as a "pistol" with a good brace setup, that is ready to drop a can on.

That 12.5 piston upper looks like a ton of fun.

@Bryan_Aim ^ that. If these are the "same" as the Taiwan style uppers but just in 9x39 I'm extra hyped

I'm in for 9x39 for sure, also a yuuuge Vintorez fan and hoping this gets us one step closer to kits or rifles

Lately I've fallen down the suppressor rabbit hole and want to suppress all the things. 9x39 looks like it will be a lot of fun

The T91 looks great too. A buddy has the 223 and it can shoot surprisingly well. I didn't check closely but it looked like he was getting close to 1 moa on our last range trip

If this turns out to be awesome I'm 100% in for a short upper. Only question I have is will I need to get different guts for my 9mm suppressor to run this cartridge?

That's a good question. In theory: yes....but theres a few drawbacks: the bullet is slightly larger in diameter than your standard 9x19mm so clearance and threads will be a factor. It also will be higher pressure but if its rated for .300BO subs then it should be fine.

Wiki indicates the bullet diameter is:

9.25mm which = .364"

Closest Sierra bullet I see is a .358 diameter.

Looks like reloading for this is a no-go.

The round looks like a 7.62x39 bolt will work and in the link it shows a round in a 5.56 magazine

I am pretty clueless as to the 9x39, could you reload using 147gr 9mm pistol bullets for plniking or does it have an odd bore size?

Just messing around with a caliper and, according to what I could find on google, the 9x39 measures a whole lot like the 7.62x39 in rim diameter, rim thickness, and overall length.  It's a little fatter at the case mouth and shoulder but not by a lot.  I wouldn't be surprised if a 7.62x39 bolt would work but no real way to check headspace on a mix/match bolt & barrel combination.  Close enough to the 7.62x39 that it should fit in a regular AK mag or 7.62x39 AR mag.

A matched barrel/bolt set (add your own BCG) would be interesting to tinker with.

Maybe after they have supersonic loads and some good defensive ammo is produced.

Gonna be a while until I'm really interested, but I'm watching.

Yes.  At least a 9mm can rated for the round (might be too much for regular 9mm cans).

Good question.

It's a military round designed to address the issues encountered on the battlefield with 200 grain 7.62x39mm subsonic
ammunition. Basically it throws a larger diameter (.36 caliber) and heavier (278 grain) bullet.

I spoke with the engineering team of one well known ammunition manufacturer well versed in the 300 BLK and they
stated it would be much easier for them to produce effective subsonic expanding ammunition in 9x39 than 300 BLK
as it was both larger in diameter and had more mass. They are also looking into doing supersonic ammunition for it
as well.

I think the projectile for this is taken from the 9.3 x 64.  Many years ago the soviets were working on a semi auto version of a dragunov in 9.3x64ish round.  Dont know if it ever took off but it would make sense to use existing bullets for an existing case.

edit; Dragunov SVDK sniper Rifle (Russia) 9,3x64mm

It will use a standard lower. The only things needed to convert a standard AR-15 to 9x39mm is:

1. A 7.62x39mm or 6.5mm Grendel bolt.
2. A 9x39mm barrel.
3. A suitable muzzle device.
4. A magazine.

That is it.........and you are up and running.

I spoke to the folks at Lehigh Defense and they were very excited about what the 9x39mm brings
to the table. They said it would be much easier making subsonic ammunition which expanded reliably
and easy to make supersonic ammunition for it........

The larger diameter and additional weight gives it a number of advantages over the 300 BLK
It makes a bullet designer's job much easier
