Quoted: I got more tickets when I had a radar detector than all the time I haven’t, or it’s because I was young. I’m blaming the radar detector though, because it’s 2024 and everything is something else’s fault. Anyway, most of the cops here don’t have radar, and when they do traffic they use a laser gun… Which are fun to play with if you do a ride along. View Quote Laser is stationary only and is much easier to defeat if you spend the money. Between a good detector and Waze you'll limit your negative encounters greatly. |

Quoted: I moved from PA, where only state police could radar and only while stationary, to Tennessee where everyone has radar and it's always on even when they're moving. My uniden R8 is hardly ever quiet as it alerts me to every cop within a 2 mile radius. What a wonderful device. At first I was wondering if there's way more cops here but it's simply a function of them all having rolling radar so it just seems like it. Only once in a while have I seen a cop without radar on or using instant on radar. I love this detector! Around here, all the 55 speed limits on country roads are being dropped to 45. Traffic is light. The cars are more capable and safer than ever. That leaves only two possibilities - asshole do-gooders that think they're saving children, or revenue generation. I say it's both. |

View Quote The way it does dynamic muting and lockouts is a lot better than any single combination of settings on the stock unit. ETA-- I haven't tested this yet, but for motorcycle helmet (eg, Cardo) integration, this app might really simplify the method to get both radar alerts and tunes piped into your helmet at the same time. The prior solution required a Sena SM10 audio-jack-to-bluetooth mixer and a rats nest of cable. The R8 Companion app is supposed to be able to have the phone send alert tones mixed into the bluetooth audio stream. |

I used to run a radar detector all the time when I was younger. Now, in conjunction with Waze, I go about 5mph over and just go with the flow. Once you start going 10+ over, your tension goes up and you arrive what? A few minutes earlier? Just not worth it to me most of the time anymore. It also helps that the speed limits in Texas are pretty high in most places.

View Quote I don't find that to be true at all, maybe with a poorly performing detector. There are plenty of times where I've gotten blips of a cop turning his radar on sometime before I see them. State patrol often drives around with there's on, and I get hits on winding roads 1/2mile or more out. If you're out on an empty road and they use IO then yeah, you're boned, but that's not often the case since there's not much point in doing traffic enforcement on a road without any. |

In WA cops cant give chase so speeders simply speed up.
I've seen maybe a dozen highway patrol since 2020. Its like they just gave up. |
