Portion control.

You can still have your favourite food - but just keep the serving size reasonable.

And soda - you really do not need so much of it

This is what I came to post. They really nail proper portions to leave you feeling satisfied without being “full”. The French especially.

That is ending, at least in Belgium.

It used to be the case that you would pay less 'inscription'tax and yearly road tax for a diesel. Also, the taxes on diesel were lower, resulting in a lower price at the pump. This was originally done to stimulate road transport using trucks.

For the past few years, taxes have been altered, so that a petrol car pays less inscription tax and yearly road tax. Also, diesel is getting more and more expensive.

Best indications are second hand values. A diesel used to be a plus, for the good economy, low taxes and cheap diesel. Nowadays you cannot sell a diesel car second hand in Belgium. It's all for export to Eastern Europe. Nobody in Belgium wants to own a diesel.

There is something called a "turning point", it's calculated every year by the association of motorists. It used to be that if you did 10.000miles/1year, a diesel was an advantage. This is now 25.000miles/1year, and rising every year. It doesn't make sense to have a diesel as POV.

All carmakers are declaring "no more combustion engines from 2030 onwards, all electric". We are going to get raped by the electric car myth, badly. No infrastructure. Tax system is heavily dependent on the tax on vehicles and tax on fossil fuels. Currently, an electric vehicle gets low or no taxes. If tomorrow everyone goes electric, the country goes bankrupt. We are getting out of nuke power (because muh green party and muh socialist party) so we'll end up with a huge demand for electricity and no means to provide it. Apart from buying nuke power from France, at a huge cost...

My retirement in 2042 is not looking good...

The USA's is boring in comparison.

Also... Europe, whether it is or isn't doesn't go on and on constantly telling everyone how great it is.

Roundabouts. These freaked me out the first few times I was driving in Europe, but I came to appreciate them:

Euro Door Locks. Even the cheapest shitbox in Europe has a proper lock with security pins, narrow keyway, and mounted upside down to make it harder to pick. Whereas I encounter multi-million dollar homes in the US secured with $10 Kwikset locks that could be opened with 2 paper clips.

@Too-Tall love your country. I’ve been there a couples times for meetings at EU headquarters (and to visit the site of a Cathedral that no longer exists that’s got family history in Liege.

Meetings at the EU headquarters showed to me even 15 years ago how poorly designed and run the EU is/was.

I think the idea of this thread isn’t to embrace the horrible government/restrictions of Europe, but taking the good (portions, walkable cities, etc) and implement them here. I’ll admit, I live in Japan and currently walk and train ride to work. It wasn’t even possible to do with when I lived in Maryland because there were not walkways along to road for much of the length between where I lived to where I worked and it was only a few miles away. That is dumb and unhealthy. I’m currently averaging 5-6 miles of walking a day here just between work and shopping for groceries. It’s awesome, but against impossible in my former area.

Must admit. I have a low tolerance for littering.

Had some shitbird sat in a McDonald’s car park a few weeks ago, not 4 yards from a bin, who opened his car window and dropped all his litter outside on the floor, including a what I found out to be a milkshake which was almost full.  Just plain rude.

I got out of my car, walked up to his window, knocked on and he opened it.  I launched his litter back into the car and told him he’d dropped something. Milkshake all over the windows, upholstery, dash him and his mates etc.

The milkshake must have clipped the window edge and bust as I launched it. Exploded everywhere and took us all by surprise.  Had to laugh at the mess in his car.

He got out of his car bouncing and looked like he was about to pick a fight but must have thought better of it.  Just stood there swearing covered in milkshake.  Scruffy twat.

No need for it.

They fix things, maintain them, and take care of them, instead of just throwing them away, and building new ones.

Every time I'm in Europe, I'm amazed at how much of Europe, the building and homes, structures, roads, are hundreds, sometimes thousands of years old.  It's nothing to see some place built 500 years ago.  And, a lot of it is really pretty.  And, then you remember, half their stuff was  blown up in WW2, and they just repaired most of it instead of replacing it.  Even a lot of their trains look old, but are well maintained.

On the other hand, here in America, everything is  new and shiny, and ugly  as it can be.  We tear down anything over 40 years old.

That’s your employer being an arsehole. Not you, mate.

If you need time then you should take it.

I get 51 days leave a year. Full pay.  I negotiated that for my skills and services.

I work very hard. Take a lot of shit, but that’s the job and that is my choice to accept it for the compensation package on offer in terms of salary and other benefits.

When I decide to take time off I do so by arrangement with my employer. I might take the family away for three weeks and when I do so it is with my employer’s blessing. They expect and indeed want me to turn off my phone, stay off the system and get some R&R.  The job burns people out and they need us on point, so they recognise the importance of down time, recreation time and family time knowing that is the key to getting the best from us as employees.  For that, they have my loyalty and dedication.

If the shit really hits the fan, they know how to reach me on my personal cellphone, but even then it is a last resort and I am compensated handsomely for it.  It’s only happened twice in 20 years on days off. Never on a proper vacation.

If you need time off then you should take it.  You need headspace. Time to chill and enjoy the good things in life.

Burn out truly sucks and it creeps up on your over a period of years.  It makes you physically ill, mentally ill and can damage all of the things you hold dear outside work like relationships and neglect to property and possessions when the exhaustion kicks in. Seen it happen too many times.

Work life balance is so important and massively overlooked.  You should never feel guilty, nor be made to feel guilty for taking time for your own well-being, rest and pleasure.

Things are changing at a glaciers pace but more US companies are offering more time off to attract younger workers. Unlimited PTO is a thing for corps that can afford it. A lot of millenials saw how their parents and grandparents worked themselves to death at high stress jobs, you know to provide a better life for their kids, and a lot are taking them up on that notion (see guy building camper van thread). Never got to ask my dad if he thought his 60+ hours a week for the overtime pay he loved was worth it in the face of losing time with his wife and kids when he died horribly of cancer in his early 50s. How many saturdays we could have spent riding dirt bikes, shooting, or hunting instead of scanning jet engine blades for GE (and be under constant layoff threat from Neutron Jack). I do think Europeans have it right with the whole holiday thing.

Have to disagree there.

Brits are not even close to the Americans when it comes to embracing this PC fuckery.  Not by a long way.  It may serve some to believe that but it is a false assumption.  Most Brits don’t buy into this shit at all. It is mocked openly. When they try to implement it nobody takes any notice, even when they try to force it.

The Blair Govt was a nightmare for trying to import this junk and they eventually pissed off everyone with it.

America has, as far as I can tell, been the primary origin for this madness from the outset, unfortunately.  Why?  I don’t know. Years before any of this crap reaches the UK it is in full swing in the US and the origins seem to be lost.

Nobody has started, embraced and implemented this PC crap like the Americans.  You guys jump in feet first, full on and with an intensity and enthusiasm which would be to your credit under normal circumstances. But with the politically correct shit it is definitely to your detriment. There is little moderation and as a result the outrage it generates merely fuels the fervour with which it is implemented as everyone butts heads and tries to force their opinion on to others.

Social media has merely made it worse and the absolutely appalling US MSM is another huge catalyst for it.  How you haven’t deleted your MSM in fiery but peaceful purge and erased their insane bullshit is beyond me.  They are beyond toxic.

Most other countries have resisted it. Some are on a folly of their own. Scotland and Sweden are prime examples of taking it way way too far, for sure, even by American standards. But the origin always seems to track back to the US and often the Western seaboard or North East.  Never the flyover states or more grounded, rural Midwestern US.

Next time please film it.

We're building new temporary buildings all over because they are cheap and that is all that matters to most people.

The landscape is littered with trailers, double wides, pole buildings, and houses sheathed in OSB covered with vinyl, sometimes with eaves.

Cleaning that up would be a fine project for spending our taxes, instead of financing the blight.

I was involved in a multi year lobbying campaign that successfully convinced Congress to require that DOD use a 50 year lifecycle calculation for determining how to construct their buildings. The wood and vinyl industry thinks 50 years is a lot. I told one congressman in particular that I thought 150 years would be a better goal.

Frankly neither do we, but, our politicians feel that they do. I wonder why that is?

I got 5 weeks of MANDATORY vacation per year. When I hit +40 hours of OT, No more OT, until those 40 hours are spent as time off. IT, management level position.

Silencers are over the counter stuff. 223 and 9mm available at normal prices.

Negatives: EU. Guns require permits. Background check and registration.

Whatta got? I realize "Europeans" is a pretty broad term.

My call is "Holiday". IMO many of them know how to balance life and work. The ones I work with routinely disappear for one or two weeks at various times throughout the year. Their attitude seems to be that either their business colleagues can step in in their absence, or it can jolly well wait until they return. I rarely work with a European professional that has the "squirrel on crack" mindset that so many US professionals do. Not advocating being lazy, but damn, IMO we could learn a thing or two from them about this.

What about black powder arms, such as cap-n-ball revolvers?

Never thought about that.

Damn. I would have had it on my dash cam as well.  Never thought to save it.

Bugger.

That would have been funny

Thanks.  The pork detail isn't something I would have guessed.  That pâté en croûte -- is that a common element?  Looks really interesting, with a lot of possibilities re ingredients.  I don't think I've ever actually seen that on a table here, just on the "The Great British Baking Show." Now I have to go make one.

Yep very common and there are indeed a lot of possibilities. One of the most common is called Paté croûte Richelieu, I hate it and the center is made of a liver paste.

An high-end is made in Lyon and include sweetbread/thymus:

Another important thing to eat charchuterie is the Pickled cucumber. In France we eat them small and pickled in vinegar only without any sugar.

Yes!

And also the settle up at the table card readers rather than hand your card over to a stranger to take in the back room and process....and maybe copy numbers down for later use.
