Quoted: Did the Key Lime plane have passengers onboard? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes The crash was reported around 10:25 a.m. Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Deputy John Bartmann said the crash involved a single-engine Cirrus SR-22 carrying two people and a cargo metroliner jet carrying just the pilot. |

Quoted: Yes. ADS-B OUT is mandated and required when operating in Class A/B/C airspace, but ADS-B IN (which can give traffic) is optional. Wow, I am SHOCKED that everyone came out of that alive/uninjured.

Key Lime Metro vs. a Cirrus. The two deadliest things in the sky meeting at precisely the same place and time. Pure dumb luck that nobody got killed. Sometimes aviation is like that. Fate is the hunter.

If you're going to do it, that looks like the best spot to put a Cirrus on that Metroliner. Someone's packages are going to be missing/delayed.

Cirrus overflew its turn to final and encroached upon the flight path of the Metroliner, which was heading straight in on a long final to a parallel runway. Metroliner was flying cargo. Chute deployed. ADS-B either made no difference or would have made no difference. It happened so quickly by the time you saw the conflict, it would have been over. If both planes had TCAS and it gave both an RA, there might have been time, but it would have been close.

Impressive that plane landed. Nice engineering work there. |

Quoted: The wikipedia page says there have been 122 parachute deployments, 101 were successful, and of all the people on the Cirrus planes, one fatality when CAPS was deployed. Kind of impressive except for that part about 21 possibly failed deployments. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: How many of those have been used in real inflight emergencies? Would love to see what that plane looked like (as in if it would have been a for sure fatal had the chute not been deployed). Wow on both counts. One plane loses 3/4s of the rear of the airframe and stays intact, the other one just so happens to have an emergency chute. Everybody involved needs new underwear and lottery tickets. This is like when that oversized load took out the bridge on I-5 with cars on it with cars and people landing in the river down below with zero fatalities. You just look at the carnage, and go, how the fuck does that happen? Buy some fucking lotto tickets.

Need to hear the tapes but sounds like the Key Lime plane was cleared visual 14L and the Cirrus 14R, Cirrus Overshot the centerline and clipped the Key Lime. Even with TCAS two non precision parallel approaches was a recipe for disaster, was the Cirrus also given a traffic advisory as a reminder? Sweringer probably has TCAS (not TCAS ii if anyone knows) and who knows what the fuck Cirrus boy was paying attention to.

Quoted: I knew the ol’ Metro was tough, but today we found out just how tough they really are! Many many of my friends flew the “death tube”, and all of them said she was a handful but a really tough airplane... they were all correct in their assessment! View Quote As a former Merlin pilot I totally agree! Those are planes I always had total confidence in, and they really did seem very tough. They were a handful for a new pilot, but once you figured out how it wants to be flown it became a true pilots airplane. This is more proof of its toughness than can almost be believed, but DAMN that thing is tough! |

The problem comes when they get reliant on the doodads and not aware of their surroundings outside. It happens a lot. |

View Quote Yep... That parachute saved some lives. Looks like he overshot his runway and hit the swearingen. The pilot of the swearingen had no clue he was hit, and he taxied to the parking ramp! I would be surprised if that cirrus was even in the right flight profile for the chute deployment. But it worked! A whole lot of luck for everyone involved. |
