The point being, if it’s something that sees me as dinner, I think it’s pretty much impossible to kill it too much. |

Here is what the ADF&G has to say about cartridge selection.
https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=hunting.firearms eta: An avid hunter of Admiralty Island brown bear (he lived to be 95) once told me that there is a difference between killing a bear and stopping it. To stop it, you need to break a shoulder because that's where its strength and speed reside. Killing a bear can take time, because sometimes the bear doesn't yet know that you have killed it. |

Quoted: That makes two experienced guides who like the 505. That’s like, a clue or something. Local guy used to do Garands in 458. That would be slick, assuming they work. He’s dead now. Quoted: A .308 should do just fine. It’s a Bear, not a Cape Buffalo. A single.308 should have no problem killing one, and a mag dump of 5+ rounds should drop any bear on Earth. It’s not the best, but I would figure adequate. I would be curious what a 5.56 would do. A string of fire, I would assume, would kill a bear just fine as well. Personally, my Beretta 1301 with slugs would be my choice in bear country. Light weight, fast, easy to put a lot of slugs down range. View Quote There was a news story about a guy hiking in Alaska about 8-9 years ago I think that put down a charging bear with a 5.45x39 AK74. 5.56 should be fine if you get enough rounds on target. I think he fired somewhere around 10-12 rounds IIRC. Now I'm not saying its ideal, but it would probably work. |

I’ve shot a 400 pound bear and I wouldn’t want to shoot him again with anything 22 caliber.

Quoted: I would want bigger than 308 against a big brownie...especially in a spitting distance alder patch..A good friend who spent most of his adult life guiding kodiak brown bear hunts on Kodiak Island has tried a pile of cartridges for a one shot point blank stop a big bear in its tracks..his choice......505 Gibbs... View Quote Agree. Imo You want something that's going to punch through bone if need be and drive deep make it feel like it was just hit by a big truck. Break a shoulder from 5 feet away and turn it. something with around 4000 lbs or more muzzle energy like a 338 or 300 ultra 4000 lbs not 2500 lbs . I looked up 505 Gibbs 6000 lbs I bet thar kicks btw If you have ever been close to a 700 or 800 lb brown bear . You wouldn't want a 5.56 or 308 if you had an opportunity to choose beforehand. Slip one in its heart and lungs it would die eventually. Might find it and it would make a great story looking for it. |

Quoted: I've got a .416 rem mag that was put together for a brown bear guide in alaska. But it is a bolt gun. I am very highly confident the fast .400 grain bullets would smash up stuff. But, it's a bolt gun. Loaded down it is my go-to gun. But it will definitely fix problems with elephant bullets. You really think a .308 is perfectly adequate for brown bear? I have no idea. I just like to err on the side of caution. It's why I bought the .416 rem. View Quote Outside of Kodiak an 8" 300BLK is superior to a cannon for animal defense. |

700lb black bear in MN had 36 round in it and 1 arrow before dying.
TRUTH ABOUT 10MM & BEARS |

Quoted: Defensive use, meaning something easy to manipulate but still packs enough punch to put down a big brown, .458 SOCOM/.450BM/.350 Legend/12GA. Any of those with a decent projectile would put serious hurt on any bear while being lightweight and easy to get on target quickly. A .308-size AR would work well too, if set up correctly. .308/.375 Raptor/.338 Federal/etc. would do just fine. The guys posting semi auto .300/.338 Magnums and such... sure, for hunting while stationary. I'd much rather pack my lightweight .458 SOCOM. View Quote .375 Raptor or .375 SOCOM should work nicely. |
|
308 loaded with 220 grain round nose. You can get those up to about 2400 feet per second and change in a 308. That should be plenty to drill a good sized hole through several feet of bear, and light enough recoil you could stay on target somewhat reasonably while mag dumping. 458 SOCOM with them Barnes TTSX would do the same deal.

I built my SBS Tac13 to run the Brenneke black magic. That being said, I'd like to build a Garand in .338-06, but it wouldn't be the most fun thing to carry around hunting. Maybe a short one?

With recoil, I could probably only get 3 aimed shots off in the span of time I could put 12 or so out of an AR. Probably just 2-3 slugs out of the 1301. (Say 3-4 seconds or so to shoulder and fire.) |

A Browning BAR is exactly what you are looking for. I have no idea if a complete list of calibers that they were chambered in is out there but it's a big list. The 338 Win Mag is the biggest caliber I see commonly and is the route I would go. Lots of versatility with the 338. Apparently some covert them to 458 Win Mag and 416 Taylor which is enough horsepower for anyone.

Quoted: I’d rather be able to put a lot of decent rounds on target quickly if your talking about self defense from bears and not hunting. Give me some decently hot .308 in a 20rd mag from a 16” AR10 with a decent quick acquisition optic. View Quote 308 is fine with good ammo. Plus the recoil is manageable enough for follow up shots. Buffalo bore is usually good for high quality ammo for hunting or otherwise. Buffalo Bore supercharged 308 |

A Shuff’s 16.1” Mini-G in .35 Whelen.
Tim builds them with Criterion M1-profile barrels in .35W, and they can run either the 5-rd “hunting” clips or the 8-rd GI clips. Several of his Alaskan clients use them as bear defense carbines or when hunting them and moose in thick timber or brushy areas. Here’s what one of his Anchorage-based clients said: Tim Shufflin of Shuff's Parkerizing returned my completed M1 Garand Mini G chambered in .35 Whelen to me this week. The 24" barrel was shortened to 16" and rebored to .35 Whelen. He milled out the ridges in the receiver legs so that a full 8-round Enbloc clip of .35 Whelen ammo could be used (a special request from me -- and the first time that he had done so). The rifle was re parkerized and resides in a new Boyd's walnut stock. Tim installed the Ultimak scout rail in place of the front handguard. I installed a Hi-Lux 2-7x32mm extended eye relief scope on see through rings. This new Mini G will serve as a brush gun up here in the Last Frontier. 8 rounds of .35 Whelen in Hornady Superformance Ammunition with a 200gr bullet traveling at 2920 fps will be bear-worthy for Alaska. Either a Browning BAR or Benelli R1 in .338WM or .300WM. I used to have the Benelli in .338. Never hunted bear though, it was a "just because" gun. It was nice and lightweight and shot plenty well. Recoil was very manageable. I only sold it because it didn't do anything my .375 Ruger couldn't do better.
