What is an HOV??? View Quote Kindof annoying seeing DC fed.gov police agencies using it to commute to work everyday. |

Meh I feel like I would abuse the HOV lanes too if I lived in a area with them.

I think most agencies, at least the ones I'm most familiar with (Loudoun sheriff, prince William police) allow take home cars only if you live no more than 30 minutes from the county you work in. Loudoun deputies that live further out I know Park the cruisers at the county line at a government facility like a fire house and POV it to their residence, usually in West Virginia.
Certain specialists get take home cars no matter what - canine, swat, fire marshal (Leo sworn), Staff duty officers, and of course deputy chiefs, assistant chiefs, and chiefs. In response to stopping off duty at a crash, while there is no specific law that requires you to do so, most departments have a policy that reads if your off duty, even in a POV, you should stop and help assuming it's safe to do so. I don't roll with any fire department tags, stickers, blinking lights, etc in my POV but I do try to stop and help if it's safe to do so. I've come across wrecks all the time in NOVA and will stop. I came across a house fire one night. I pulled into the neighbors driveway and called it in and walked the property to find the home owner and make sure everyone was out. |

Just because of this thread I am going to park in a fire lane right in front of a business since I don't have an HOV lane near by.

So the MWAA PD gets a non-emergency call to Fauquier County every day around 7am and 4pm? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Bingo, a lot of agencies don't allow the use of lights and sirens to go to priority calls only those that where someone's life is in immediate danger, we respond to alarms, domestics and accidents with injuries without lights and sirens, so maybe they were on there way to a call or job related response which requires an undelayed response without lights and sirens. We used to get complaints all the time from residents. "I saw one of your police cars in XXX city." Yeah they were at the range, classroom, evidence lab, etc in that city. |

Am I missing something? How do you know they are cops if they are off duty?
OR are you just talking about officers in take home cars that are out of their jurisdiction? They're really not off duty at that point. You think if they are in their take home car going home and a car flips in front of them they don't have a duty to stop? |

I'm guessing that OP rants on Facebook calling everyone "snowflakes" whilst possessing a real "snowflake" mentality.

buy dash cam, record car #..forward to agency? or bitch about it in the internet...guess which will make a difference?

More responsibility = more perks. If you're driving a marked car home and there's an accident or some kind of problem on the way there, are you going to just drive on by? No, you will have to get involved at least temporarily. Are you obligated to help on your way home from working at Wendy's? I wasn't always a cop and it never bothered me before I was either. Might be a dumb question, but wouldn't it make more sense to open that lane to everyone and help the traffic flow?

Might be a dumb question, but wouldn't it make more sense to open that lane to everyone and help the traffic flow? View Quote I'm fairly certain there was a study done that show HOV lanes actually cause more traffic congestion. So in that case, having cops in the HOV lane would be beneficial. |

Driver in a sky blue Peterbuilt COE came over the radio...
" I got my 2 kids wiff me....can I drive in the HOV lane?" Me, " Sure, why the hell not!?" And then I see this cabover riding along in the HOV lane. |

On the VA side of the DC Metro Area, the HOV lanes are abused to fuck. We can have HOV+2, sometimes HOV+3, then motorcycles, then also there is some super secret "Clean Emission" tag that allows hybrids and electric cars to ride in the HOV. I have no idea on that last one. Shit, the state police during the weekdays only pull over HOV offenders. Speeding? dont care lol. But i have seen a massive number of obviously off duty, out-of-jurisdiction LEO cars commuting to and from work in the HOV lane. Why? When they are off-duty, arent they just a citizen like me? If they are not working or responding to a call, why do they get the HOV lane? Ive read the sign of allowable vehicles in that lane many, many times and it never lists "Someone in a cop car that needs to get to work". You might think that so far im being a little incredulous. But here is a list of LEO vehicles ive personally seen in the HOV lane out past the 50/66 (Which is 30 miles outside of DC) interchange and heading into/out of the city. -Arlington Police -Alexandria Police -PFPA (pentagon force protection agency) -USCP (united states capitol police) -DHS -FPS (federal protective service, protects all the federal buildings) -MWAA PD (Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department) -USPP (united states park police, protects monuments in DC) -MTP (metro transit police) -BEP (bureau of Engraving police) -Then just regular ole black, unmarked cars with cop antennas and US.GOV tags View Quote |

If they are in a marked car they can enforce traffic laws. How do you know they are not enforcing HOV violations?
