S&W M1917 .45ACP revolver
9mm back then was pretty much limited to ball so it's .45 for me |

Well, considering the BHP had a massive hump in it's feed ramp up until the 1980s/the MkIII...it would not deal with any modern non-ball ammo at all. It really doesn't like flat points or JHPs in it's original configuration. So, the BHP is out.
The 1911 would probably function just fine with most modern defensive ammo since most of it is profiled very similarly to ball. Magazines would be the big question for the 1911. OP - modern mags with modified feed lips, or original/USGI mags? Not as big a deal with most modern ammo again, but...it's a consideration. If forced to use period mags, then a 1911 - either in 45 or 38 Super. Since original 38 super barrels headspaced on the rim...they could be kind of hit or miss, pretty literally so probably 45ACP. Fed a diet of HST or Remington Golden Sabre, it should run just fine...modern mags would make it a bit less of a question mark, but I don't think it'd matter that much. Otherwise - a Colt 1903/08 in either 32 or 380. Either would/do function fine with modern ammo. |

S&W Military and Police, model of 1905, fourth change in .38, 4”. Wouldn’t have to worry about it feeding modern HPs, the thing balances perfectly, and I’m very accurate with it. Maybe a 2” or a 3” version for a reload.

So, pretty much what i already do? Technically, I carry newer versions of those weapons, but I'd have no problem carrying the originals of any of them.

S&W .357 Magnum or a Colt 1908, depending on the day and dress

With modern ammo, a BHP. However a BHP of 1945 vintage won't reliably feed modern JHP so it would need to be modified.
A S&W Registered Magnum. 357 with a 4 or 5 inch barrel would also be acceptable with modern .357 loads. Third choice would be a TT-33 Tokarev, cuz 7.62x25 is awesome. |
