Mazda 323 GTX. It looks like a standard grocery-getting shitbox, but it packs AWD, a turbocharged DOHC 4-cylinder engine, some chassis stiffening over the base model, and weighs 2600lb.
View Quote
I still want one, but there weren't that many made, and most were flogged to death or succumbed to the tin worm. Most that survive and are for sale are overpriced for their condition.

The same engine was used, sans turbo and other goodies, in the Mazda Miata.

Eta

IIRC, Mazda only imported ~1200 of them to the US, so they were rare here even when new.

Here’s an odd one... 1991 Mazda 929.

I was too young to be a proper fit, but I always thought it had very nice styling and it still looked good 10-15 years later, I think Mazda hit it out of the park with this one.

One of my favorite early youtube videos is of the AE86/Corolla GTS with a 20B Cosmo motor swap.

The acceleration is insane (car is only 2200-ish lbs)

https://youtu.be/osJSoen8hxQ?t=33

Here is my old Z.
73 240Z
Triple sidedraft Mikuni 44mm
2.4 heads/2.8 block
3.1 stroker
280z 5 speed and rear end
Tokico coilovers
Longchamp XR4 wheels

A bunch other stuff.

Thinking about it now, since video games have been the only link to supercars that most of us have ever had, aside from car shows,  the De Tamosa Pantera has really been missed.  Those were the cars on my walls as a kid, the Countach, 288GTO and the Pantera.

I had one of those pass me on the highway one day and I had no clue what it was. My friend googled it while we followed and I've been in love ever since.
Kinda tough to find one without some damage or cracks in the acrylic but man, I'd love to have one of those in my driveway.

A lot of the cars posted here aren't exactly "lesser known". I mean, really? Sentra SE-R? That body style of Sentra was produced in Mexico for about 15 years and called the Nissan Tsuru. Honda Prelude? I think half the people in here owned one of those gutless B21A1/B20A5 shitboxes at one point in time.

Onto obscurity....

Mastretta MXT (Mexican car)

VUHL 05 (another Mexican car)

Inferno (1400hp and Mexico's third supercar)

CAMI Terra Wind (South Carolina)

CAMI Terra Wind Amphibious Motorcoach

Chrysler TC (Lebaron customized by Maserati)
The interiors on them were gorgeous, the rest of the car was a piece of shit LeBaron.

Cadillac XLR-V

C4 ZR1
Check the engine out at 2:53. Even though it's still a dookie C4, the DOHC engine is kinda cool.
C4 Corvette ZR-1 | The Forgotten King of the Hill

Ferrari FF

ATI Terminator (Ford Focus w/Mustang Cobra V8 and no, this wasn't a one-off)

Focus Wagon

TSX Wagon

Mazda 6 Wagon

Nissan Axxess
I remember Dodge making a big deal about having the first minivan with two sliding doors, but this piece of shit Nissan was actually the first. Mine had a manual transmission too.

S13 convertible

Acura 1.6 EL/Honda Domani (Kinda like a cross betwen Civic & Accord styling, sold in Canada and Asia)

Nissan Stagea, this one has a Skyline front end, but it's pretty much a Skyline wagon

C140, they had a convertible and a coupe. I've never seen the cabriolet version outside of Florida before.

Ford Centurion (OG Expedition)

You sir have excellent taste....

Italian style and finesse, American Muscle Soul....and there is NO sound like a 4BBL 351C coming on mid-range and peak cam timing.

They used to be a little less than uncommon around here in the 70's, and early 80's. I would see one now and then every summer, and a couple of folks owned them in town.
One is still in town, (72) but the owner never puts it on the road anymore, and it has been sitting since the early 90's. Probably trashed with dry rot.

The Mitsubishi Galant vr4. 4 door dsm with incredible power potential.

Mazda 323 gtx. Turbo awd hot hatch.

Volvo 850 turbo. Classy, comfortable, and fast. Solid build quality and the last of the really good Volvo's. My current daily driver, and smooth as can be.

Many others of course but those have always been on my undercover cool list. If I found a Galant vr4 for the right price I'd buy it in a second.

My mom had a Ford EXP growing up.  It is the only one I have ever seen.   It had nothing for a back seat and was turbo charged.   It was very similar to the one in the photo.  She used to pile 3 of us kids in the back without a seat.  Man those were the good ole days of no fucks given about your kids!

I had the chance to buy a 91 or 92 Toyota Crown taxi with a 2JZ.  Obscure white sedan with wing mirrors and rear window shades.  Complete with all the paraphernalia in the trunk that came with it new, Including the seat and window doilies/curtains.

It had 13,000 miles on it.  I am kicking myself.  6,000 dollars and licensed and titled.

My mom liked odd cars.  She had one of these when I was 18.

'71 Mercury Capri.  It was a Ford Euro import.  2.3L overhead cam with a 4spd manual that was quick and nimble.  Front seats fully reclined.  Great for going on dates.

I had a first year {1995?} Dodge Avenger which was my cool two-door highway cruiser car in my youth..   It was a odd duck of a car with the dash from the Eclipse, the engine from a non-governed DOHC Neon, taillights which looks like a Dodge Stealth.
