I have long maintained that if we had to refight WW II, we could not do so. We can't produce quantity like we used to. Something like only 3 steel mills left in our nation.

An interesting fact I learned recently:
Although I thought we (US) only recycled steel, we do actually smelt from ore. Even more interesting was that we still use coke-fired furnaces. Apparently it is still the preferred approach for oilfield pipe, auto steels, and a few other industries with tight specs. |

I don't care how much fucking steel the Chinese make. I don't allow Chinese sources still in pipe.
They lie in thier material test reports. China is ass hoe |

Chinese steel cuts like total dog shit on my laser at work. Owner is a cheap fuck who screams about supporting america but buys the cheapest chinese shit always. Its fucking infuriating to listen to the guy talk

Quoted: Notice that Trump's 10% tariff on foreign steel in 2018 did absolutely nothing to encourage the purchase of US made steel? It just jacked up the price of steel across the board. We can't find pink-haired skinny jeans young adults to work in fast-food restaurants. You think we could staff our own steel mills again if the majority of our production came home? Fat frickin' chance. The chinese own that market because they have plenty of ore and labor to turn it into steel. View Quote Negative. Trump got companies to look at and start to reopen plants. We were on the way to more companies and industries expanding and returning to the USA. But gosh, those mean tweets were debilitating |

Quoted: Yep, I buy a decent amount of mechanical bar and tube ( almost no structural stuff ) and have several customers that dont allow Chinese steel. All the rest say avoid it if possible. I guess its not so bad if its rebar or angle, but nobody wants to risk it for stuff going downhole. And Im happy for that. Screw china and their pigiron View Quote |

When the Ukraine/Russian thing is all over the Ukrainians are going to be up there with steel production after all the scrap Russian metal they're going to be picking up and melting down.

I dont know about all steel but the rigid pipe we have today is some of the shittyest pipe to thread since i started threading pipe in about 72.
You think your dies are bad and then pick up an old piece of pipe that is 50 years old and put a thread on it and its beautiful. |

Quoted: Facks. US is still a manufacturing powerhouse. Why would we want to make steel when we can let the other guys do this. https://www.aei.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/WorldManufacturing.png View Quote The problem is a large majority of our manufacturing is dependent on Chinese manufacturing. We saw this when car ECM chips stopped pouring in from China. New car sales plummeted because we couldn't produce them. What do you think would happen if China stopped sending us that sweet chineseum steel? What about the raw materials that go into a majority of our pharma drugs? |

Quoted: Steel guy here. This was poised to change. America is still a great place to manufacture if .guv would get out of the way and I’m not referring to the EPA. It’s the push of everyone into liberal degrees and free money. Steel mill work isn’t the best, but it pays well for those humble enough to accept it needs to be done. I have the utmost respect for our mill workers. What a great group. View Quote There was a modern electric steel mill west of Indianapolis. Tons of good paying jobs. It got shut down after about ten years due to the economics of the plant. I think it’s back open under new management but in a limited capacity. American Government and “enlightened” management are our worst enemy. TC |

Quoted: Here's the thing... most of the iron ore used to make Chinese steel doesn't actually come from China. Much of it comes from Australia - and other countries as well (Ukraine is one of the world's top exporters to China). Chinese steel isn't cheap and plentiful because they have lots of iron... it's cheap and plentiful because their labor is cheap and plentiful, and they have more available energy for steel production. However, Australia recently became a net exporter of oil for the first time.... so I guess we'll see what happens. View Quote And, much of that cheap industrial energy comes from un-scrubbed coal fired power plants. TC |

No more steel in Bethlehem, PA. There is a casino there now that ironically attracts a large number of Chinese people to it.
There is also a Walmart and QVC warehouse on former land that undoubtedly holds a bunch of Chinese goods. |

Quoted: It wouldnt be a instant increase. It takes years to get more production going. View Quote Yep. Bringing new capacity online is not quick or cheap. Last time I quoted an EAF and transformer it was around 18 months to get it on site, plus install. Probably 24-36 months at this point. I'm already being told 2024 delivery for some EAF stuff right now. |
