UK’s self-sufficiency in fresh vegetables hits record lows
The new government has been urged to help ensure self-sufficiency doesn’t drop any further as new figures show levels for some food are at the lowest since records began. The importance of increasing self-sufficiency levels has been highlighted today (14 August), the day which the national larder would run empty if the public only ate UK food from 1 January. According to 2023 Defra figures, the UK is 62% self-sufficient in food. While this reflects similar levels of the past decade, some sectors have seen a recent decline. For example, the UK’s self-sufficiency in fresh vegetables is at its lowest since records began in 1988 at 53%. The NFU said the new Labour government must recognise the vulnerability of global food supply chains and the importance of a stable food supply in the UK. This year, farmers have experienced one of the wettest winters and springs on record, which has put pressure on food production. This has also contributed to a collapse in farm business confidence, causing a dramatic decline in the area planted of cereals for the 2024 harvest. At the same time, record-breaking global temperatures have impacted key exporting countries across the world. Imports make up 84% of fresh tomatoes on sale in the UK, yet tomato imports from Spain and Morocco fell by 17% in February 2023 compared to the five-year average. 2.9B PERSONAL RECORDS EXPOSED, INCLUDING SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS A major hack targeting a large data broker took place four months ago, capturing 2.9 billion personal records. Since the hack, the information was not released publicly until earlier this month, when a member of the group began publishing the data on an online marketplace. That post was not initially discovered by researchers until earlier this week. The released data includes social security numbers, names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, and other personal information. “If this in fact is pretty much the whole dossier on all of us, it certainly is much more concerning,” said Teresa Murray, Consumer Watchdog Director for the US Public Information Research Group. “And if people weren’t taking precautions in the past, which they should have been doing, this should be a five-alarm wake-up call for them.”
PANAMA’S MIGRANT FLIGHTS TO BEGIN Panama’s program to repatriate migrants who illegally crossed into the country via the Darien Gap will begin this month. The migrants will be flown back to their home countries under the program, which was announced earlier this year and immediately after President Jose Raul Mulino took office. The US has agreed to fund the flights as part of a broader effort to curb illegal immigration that is often US-bound.
UKRAINE’S MOVE INTO RUSSIA SLOWS Ukrainian forces are seeing lesser gains in Russia over the last 24 hours, as Moscow begins to move additional forces to the new front lines. About 1,150 sq kilometers are in the hands of the Ukrainians, having lost one small village overnight. Ukrainian officials have said that they do not intend to permanently hold territory within Russia,but are using the incursion to improve its bargaining position for peace talks and to show Russian vulnerability. Some officials have said that a “buffer zone” could be established, similar to Moscow’s claims of a buffer zone when it pushed toward Kharkiv from the east months ago. Russian forces continue to build new trench networks further back from the Ukrainian incursion, specifically between those forces and a nuclear power plant that is about 50km from the front lines. Britain’s Defense Ministry said Thursday that Ukrainian forces would be allowed to use UK-provided weapons inside Russia, but put restrictions on the use of long-range Storm Shadow missiles.
WSJ: UKRAINIANS DESTROYED NORD STREAM IN UNSANCTIONED HIT An exclusive report by the Wall Street Journal claims that Ukrainian operatives and businessmen were responsible for the destruction of the Nord Stream pipeline in 2022. “I always laugh when I read media speculation about some huge operation involving secret services, submarines, drones and satellites,” one officer who was involved in the plot said. “The whole thing was born out of a night of heavy boozing and the iron determination of a handful of people who had the guts to risk their lives for their country.” According to the WSJ, President Volodymyr Zelensky had supported the plan initially, but the plot was discovered by Dutch intelligence, which then warned the US, Germany, and others. Ukraine was warned against the course of action, and Zelensky withdrew his orders. However, General Zaluzhniy approved the plan despite the President’s order and it proceeded. A Ukrainian intelligence official told the media outlet that President Zelensky “did not approve the implementation of any such actions on the territory of third countries and did not issue relevant orders.” An official also said President Zelensky heavily criticized the General after the explosion, who responded by claiming the operatives could not be contacted ahead of the operation. |

The BBC write that Clade 1 can be spread by: -Sex -Skin-to-skin contact -Talking or breathing close to others Some scientists suggest there have been instances where Clade 1 Mpox can jump via airborne respiratory particles, but it’s not the main form of transmission for the virus. I’m not saying you should be worried about catching it. Seeing a recent article on some fast food chains closing some of their restaurants made me think of just how spoiled we are in today’s world to have this much food readily available all around us in grocery stores, convenience stores and the multitude of restaurants all across America. The major culling of cattle and chickens would drastically change that in no time, also impacting other food items made with dairy and eggs. Without these choices, how could most restaurants and many grocery stores stay in business? The impact of this could be devastating on so many levels. |

It kind of makes me wonder if something bigger that potentially affects the rest of the world may be getting ready to happen? The upcoming election and who knows what else comes along with it will play havoc here in America and you know some parts of the country will slide right down that road to tyranny just like they did before. The company employed around 84,900 people as of July 2023, according to its annual filing. That number does not account for the February layoffs. Cisco did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Its shares fell nearly 1% after Reuters first reported the cuts. The stock was down over 9% this year as of Thursday's close. Cisco, the largest maker of the routers and switches that direct internet traffic, has been grappling with sluggish demand and supply-chain constraints in its mainstay business. That has pushed the company to diversify with moves such as its $28-billion buyout of cybersecurity firm Splunk, which it completed in March. The acquisition will reduce its reliance on one-time equipment sales by boosting its subscription business. The company has been trying to incorporate AI products in its offerings and in May reiterated its target of $1 billion worth of AI product orders in 2025. In June, it launched a $1-billion fund to make investments in AI startups such as Cohere, Mistral AI and Scale AI. The company said at the time it had made 20 AI-focused acquisitions and investments in the last several years. The layoffs are the latest in the tech industry, which has been cutting costs this year to offset big investments in AI. Over 126,000 people have been laid off across 393 tech companies since the start of the year, according to data from tracking website Layoffs.fyi. What happens when a storm comes in and destroys your roof, thus exposing your food supply to the elements, but you could no longer afford home owners insurance? One of the worst things governments can do when things go badly — but always seem to do — is make price controls. Gas on fire. In case of actual food emergency, police military, thugs, and hungry people, go house to house, warehouse to warehouse, farm to farm — and seize food. People become expert at hiding food. Farms often are picked over by plagues of locust-people. Farmers stop farming… Hoarders, speculators, and preppers are different sorts, but they all get blamed as if they are hoarders. Hoarders who buy everything they can get at last minute are a problem. Preppers actually REDUCE the problem because they are not starving and stressing the supplies, but preppers get blamed as if they are hoarders. Speculators, as with preppers, often buy far in advance of the problems and actually part of the SOLUTION. They buy when prices are lower and supplies are common. Speculators can be fantastic. When prices skyrocket, speculators find a way to get their supplies to market even when they must travel far even to another country. But dirty governments run by dimwits will often call speculators “hoarders” and arrest them and seize their supplies. Governments who often cause food emergencies always blame farmers, distributors, retailers, for price gouging and hoarding. Government price fixing, seizures, crime from government, and street thugs, causes actual production and distribution to plummet. That’s when the REAL problems start — and potatoes are worth far more than gold. Be a prepper or a speculator. STOCK UP. HIDE. First rule of prep-club, there is no prep-club. Act poor and dumb.
