Does anybody secretly wish the Cold War had gone hot?  We had a lot of very cool technology that would have had a *very* high entertainment value had we started popping that shit off.  Biggest problem would have been no LiveLeak yet.  Putting that aside, thoughts?

No f-ing way. Years later, when we got into the archives - the Soviets intended to go nuke on day 1. There would have been a great deal of ass kicking and few survivors. Which was an important point to me having been there personally from 1986 to 1990. While we laugh at the quality of Soviet equipment compared to ours, being outnumbered 5 or 10 to one becomes a problem that gets harder to solve the longer the clock tics. Fighting outnumbered is in many ways also fighting against time.

Sort of just for the entertainment. Where I was in Germany they said we had under an hour life expectancy so there is that. The impression I had was that we would get rolled up until reinforcements could arrive. The Reforger concept.

Except those reinforcements would have never arrived.  The Soviet war plans called for nuking Rhein-Main, Raimstein, and  Schiphol at the start with persistent chemical attacks on the POMCUS sites.  France would refuse us rights to fly over or land in their territory.  So, reinforcements could land in Spain, England, Italy, etc. with no way to get to the fight in Germany.

Define "destruction"...…..

If you mean everything turned to irradiated glass, then probably not real.

If you mean civilization reverting to the early 19th century after the food on your shelves, the medicine in your cabinets, and the fuel in your car and generator runs out, then yep....

The realization of the true consequences of it "going hot" by both sides is the only thing that prevented it...

Try to visualize the eye of a Hurricane Katrina hitting every population center, power plant, communications hub, military facility and oil refinery in the US simultaneously......

The opening salvo as Warsaw Pact forces headed towards the border was going to be nukes against NATO's HQ and forward operating points, air bases and nuclear weapons depots to decapitate NATO, break down the initial operation, prevent NATO air forces from retaliating and prevent and nuclear counterstrike.

Yup.  I read the first one before Clancy took off.  The original and the follow up, "the untold story", really were good books for what kept my attention.  Also the background of the author and who he consulted, kind of made me give some credence to the plausibility of some of the events and strategies.
