While stationed at Kunsan I was mountain biking of the end of the runway and crashed epically into c wire. Two expensive tires and stitches make for a fun story now. Not so much then.

I knew a Coast Guard officer who biked completely around Basra every day. He left. I decided I'd try it one morning. Got almost all the way around, found that I had to pass a checkpoint and bicycle through the Iraqi side of the airport, or go all the way back. I got lucky and they let me through.

It's been almost 40 years for me, but I do remember, the worst thing you could hear at 0-dark thirty while wading through a swamp was this, echoed down the line, front to rear, "Hey, the Lt. is taking over the patrol." At that point you knew the night had just gotten worse.

I was the driver in the LT's tank when we got our brand new M1A1's at Graf.

Slamming down the trails in the back of nowhere the LT says, "Ling!, take that trail on the left up ahead!". I said, Sir, I think that's a goat path. He said, I don't care! Take it!

So I did.

AS we were making a new road in Graf, a wide flat field was opening up ahead and the trail went right to it.

He said punch it, so I did.

It was winter and the wide flat field had a nice covering of snow on it. Rather pretty until I hit the lake with my tank and broke through about an inch and a half of ice.

All I heard was the LT, in his heavy Boston accent yelling, Don't stop! Don't stop as a wall of ice came racing up the front slope toward my head. My hatch was open, of course.

The ice crashed above me as I ducked down and then water and ice flooded the driver's hole.

We cleared the little lake and made it out on the other side. The tank's front slope was covered in mud and tiny frogs. As they got cold they would stiffen up and roll off the front slope. I felt sorry for the frogs.

On a good note, he was a great LT, who I would have followed to hell, (we would have never made it back, he would have gotten lost) and he helped clean the tank when we got back.
