"Ban Era Businesses".  They were the go to for LE during those years, and immediately after until other manufacturers could get going.

Ruger was so close to becoming one of these companies, then they released the LCP.  Did a 180 on Bill's distain for civilian martial arms and became a go to budget manufacturer.  Remington was just like them, but decided to stay the course and ride it into irrelevancy .

Kimber, everyone who didn't want to spend on a Colt wanted a Kimber back in the day.

I don't think Magpul has gone down hill at all, its just there's a lot more competition in the same marketplace these days.

Ruger really did turn things around.  I'm glad even though I've never really been interested in anything but their rimfires.

Japanese. Miroku makes Winchester and some Browning shotguns. And they are actually very well made firearms.

I do agree It is unfortunate that they aren’t made in the US.

Colt still sells. I’ve been hearing Colt is irrelevant for 50 years, but most gun buyers will pick Colt, if all things are equal.

Rock River at least still bothers to show up at the National Matches at Perry.

They sell a lot of Service Rifles to shoot there and some very nice competition 1911s.

I also pulled a lot of good deals out of their blem/seconds/clearance room there this year and last year.

In addition, back in the 70s or 80s Olin spun off Winchester gun making to an investor group called US Repeating Arms, which was bought and sold and ended up under the FN umbrella along side Browning. Olin was always only in it to make ammo under the Winchester name, and profit from the brand elsewhere.

We'll see in ten years.

Colt made most of their money off government contracts, like Glock.

Then other companies started making the same guns, but better, or cheaper, or more capable.

I was going to respond the same but note he said guns AND Chinese junk. Their Miroku guns are works of art, however my Winchester-branded Chinese screwdriver set is a pile of trash.

True.  Really the RPR was where I thought "Ok that's pretty cool."  If I wasn't already balls deep into custom precision rifles, I probably would have one.

Gun companies will come and go.  Just as with smugglers, capitalists, politicians, and gangsters, if there is money to be made, someone will step into the gap and start making money.

If they don't have the business skill to give the buyers what they want, they will fold, and someone else will start making whatever they think will sell.  If they get it right, they make money, if they aren't smart enough to make what the public wants, they won't make money and they will fold.

If prices are too high, the buying public will ignore them.  The tricks are figuring out what the public really wants, and what they are willing to pay for it.

When I read the thread title I thought Colt, but Remington is a close second. Between Savage, Ruger, and Tikka why would anyone buy a Remington. For shotguns I have always preferred Mossberg over Remington anyways. But, back in the day when I was 25 years younger and living in upstate NY, the 870 and highly desirable 1100s were kings with the Model 700 being on top for rifles. Not at all today.

Those are good options in the AR market. Most of them used to be the affordable brands. Now they're more or less dead.

CMMG has done well to stay above those brands. They used to be more middle of the road, but they have some interesting 9mm ARs, caliber conversions and other options.
