There is another important dimention.  Nearly all Shia are anti-Royalist but Sunni are very divided on that issue.  The very anti-Royalist Sunni factions like Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood are politically alligned towards Iran and against the middle-east monarchies regardless of religion.

Hamas are Sunni Salafists, Hezbollah are Shia.  Two different sects of Islam that try to kill each other when there’s no one else to fight.  Remember the Iran/Iraq war?  Sunnis vs Shiites.

Nov. 10, 2023. Source

Violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank has escalated to nearly four times its level before the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, leading to more than 175 deaths, almost all of them Palestinian.

Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli settlers and soldiers have been a longstanding issue. But the war between Israel and Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, has further stoked tensions in the West Bank. The territory is much bigger than Gaza and a more complex Palestinian-majority area, where a growing number of Israeli settlements have also taken root.

Many of the confrontations have broken out either between Palestinian civilians and Israeli soldiers, often after an Israeli-led arrest or raid, or they have broken out after attacks and physical intimidation by Israeli settlers.

Clashes between Palestinian militants and Israeli troops have also escalated, fanning fears that war could break out on a second front.

The confrontations have also become increasingly deadly. A large proportion of the civilian deaths occurred after demonstrations or protests turned violent. These included many instances in which Palestinians threw stones at Israeli forces, who then responded with tear gas, rubber-coated bullets, stun grenades or live ammunition, or a combination of those. A number of deaths also occurred during direct attacks in which Israeli soldiers opened fire on Palestinians.

The data does not include episodes of violence that have occurred since Nov. 3, including Israeli military raids in the city of Jenin on Thursday, where 14 Palestinians were killed, according to Palestinian officials.

The data was compiled by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, a crisis monitoring organization, which collected information about political violence in the West Bank by examining reports from governments, social media, and local and national news services.

The map above does not include cases of looting, land seizure or property destruction in which physical violence was not reported. But these sorts of episodes have also increased in frequency since Oct. 7, often targeting herders and Bedouin communities and destroying homes or sources of livelihood, like olive tree groves.

Is this like in the movies when each henchman waits their turn for an ass beating by the hero?

I've been wondering from day 1 if Hezbollah was pulling a page from Marshal Zhukov in this whole thing.

Wait for Israel to commit fully to Hamas then strike. Israel seems to have been mitigating this.

With my military prowess of scrolling on Twitter it looks as if this is correct.

The tough talk from Israel  about the situation  on the Northern border  changing soon sounds like they are going in. We'll  see soon enough.

They played politicians like Netanyahu perfectly by pretending to set aside fighting in favor of running Gaza.  They even failed to attack Israel or support other organizations who did, all to lull the Israelis into a false sense of security.

They knew Israel would retaliate, and they were planning for information operations to make the most of the inevitable civilian casualties.

Where is the poor plan?  Seriously, if I'm missing something I'd really like to know what it is.

Hamas mistook Israel’s likely response.

Israel is calling Hamas' bluff on the baby issue.  Mobile incubators means the babies can be evacuated to save them if Hamas really cares about the babies.

I'm assuming they're waiting on Israel to get low on supplies, then strike. Only issue for them is the U.S. getting in the way. And Israel not running out of bombs.

I read something that said they do that because they found out that plain round helmets made them stick out like a sore thumb to pali snipers. They appear lumpy from afar while wearing those. Supposedly, they can shift them around to provide shade on their necks in the direction of the sun, too.

NYT

The Gaza Strip's hospitals "must be protected," President Biden said on Monday as Israeli troops battled to seize control of what Israel says is a Hamas command complex that lies below the enclave's main medical facility, Al-Shifa Hospital.

Thousands of people fled Al-Shifa over the weekend as Israeli troops encircled it, and the World Health Organization on Monday warned of a "dire and perilous" situation for patients. The health organization said in a statement that Al-Shifa "is not functioning as a hospital anymore," after running out of fuel and water, risking the lives of patients.

"My hope and expectation is that there will be less intrusive action relative to hospitals," Mr. Biden told reporters in the Oval Office when asked if he had expressed concerns to Israel.

Mr. Biden said U.S. officials "remain in contact with the Israelis" to secure a pause in the fighting to allow for the release of hostages held by Hamas and other militant groups. "I remain somewhat hopeful, but hospitals must be protected," Mr. Biden added.

Jake Sullivan, Mr. Biden's national security adviser, said at a briefing shortly afterward that the United States and Israel "do not want to see firefights in hospitals."

The Israeli government has told the White House, Mr. Sullivan said, that it is prepared to provide fuel to hospitals to ensure they can continue to operate. In some cases, he said, Israeli officials have told the White House that they have been unable to communicate with hospital administrators.

But Mr. Sullivan underlined the president's call to ensure hospitals be allowed to operate.

"That's something we will continue to work on, but the position of the United States on this matter is clear," Mr. Sullivan said. "Hospitals should be protected, hospitals should be able to run effectively, evacuation routes have to be safe and the Israeli government has told us as recently as today, that there are and will continue to be evacuation routes for people leaving hospital compounds."

Israeli and American security officials have said a Hamas command base lies beneath the hospital, and have cast it as an example of Hamas' willingness to use civilians as human shields. Hamas and hospital officials have denied the allegation.
