Very nice!

I hike in the state forest around my home. I like to carry my lever action when I do. It just feels nice, to exercise a right and walk softly while carrying a big stick.

Who would choose a pump 12g for hiking over a semi auto 9mm pistol?

Even in Alaska, I'll take a Glock 17 with a +5 extension for 23 rounds of 9mm over a pump shotgun with 5 rds of 12g.

You don't have enough money to get me to use those fucking mag extensions when function actually matters. They have a bad habit of cracking where they slide onto the mag, and puking your ammo all over the ground.

Then you get turned into bear shit.

A shotgun is also easier to shoot well than a handgun, and slugs will put holes in a bear that you can stick 3 fingers into. 9mm against a bear? Call me when you can hit a target the size of a man's hand from across the backyard, when it's moving towards you at 30mph, bobbing up and down all the way.

Because that's about how big the "instant off, caliber doesn't matter much" are is on a bear.

I don't think I've ever seen one that heavy. We sold a ton of Brenneke Black Magic slugs. They seemed to have a good reputation and were purpose built for penetration over expansion unlike many hunting slugs. They have quite the recoil to them.

Seriously. I've walked around the Everglades all day with a 12 gauge in hand. That's in waders and water. Some people are seriously out of shape and plain weak.

Hell, I duck hunt in the glades holding a 12 gauge, in the water, for 5-6 hours at a time all duck season. You're standing in the water entire time holding the gun. There's no cushy duck blind to smoke cigars and drink beer.

The worst kicking-and most accurate-slugs I ever shot were the discontinued Remington Buckhammers. As bad as they hurt to shoot, I was shocked at how small the group was.

ETA-Brennekes seem to be the most highly regarded slug available. There's likely a good reason for that.

I remember the Buckhammers but don't remember seeing any penetration tests. Lots of the Deer specific slugs aren't hard enough and expand too much

LMAO FPDNNI. Must not be a hunter. I've spent days on end doing nothing but walking through waist high grass carrying a 12 gauge, or up, down and around mountains carrying a long action rifle, scope, day pack, binoculars, several bottles of water, etc. It's not impossible. Unless you're a 21'er and can't be bothered to wipe the Cheeto dust off your fingers and leave mom's basement.

All these guys wanting to hunt re-introduced mammoths and Tyrannosaurs should probably read this. 1000+- pound bears will graphically end a person; do they really think they can take one of the above?

What's the statute of limitations for contributing to the delinquency of a minor?

Kodiak at night, drizzling and you can't see 6 inches has a way of saying that you are no longer at the top of the food chain.

@brachiosaur  no good Kodiak stories as the half dozen times I've been to the Rock were all for work.  Unless you want to here about all the drinking and girls.

Who would choose a pump 12g for hiking over a semi auto 9mm pistol?

Even in Alaska, I'll take a Glock 17 with a +5 extension for 23 rounds of 9mm over a pump shotgun with 5 rds of 12g.
