To help understand the "why" military action is taking place, and where it may take place, its important to understand more about Ukraine and that's why I have posted Ukrainian history and politics here. Any military conflict has economics as an influencer:

I wonder if Russia will start with limited incursions into the separatists areas under the cover of protecting civilians fleeing to Russia? Once he has more forces there, he could then easily create more false flags on his own forces to show Ukraine as the aggressor.
At that point, some of the countries who are expected to back Ukraine (Germany) can safely condemn them for their supposed actions. They can then back off sanctioning Russia because they are the "victim". I strongly feel there are several nations that would rather back Russia but they can't publicly because they are supposed to be enemies. If Russia can manipulate some pretext for invading Ukraine that gives those countries a reason to condemn Ukraine, then Russia wins. |

All it takes is for them to push the narrative that Russia was attacked first and people will believe it. Logic is tossed out the window. People don't fact check anything on their own. We have seen it happen time and time again where it is clear as day what is reported is false but that doesn't stop people from believing it unfortunately. |

Putin has already got his victory.
He's going to either get concessions out of NATO or invade and then conclusively demonstrate how weak NATO really is right now when it fails to pass any meaningful sanctions. NATO is so weak that only in the last month has it started to get serious about sending ATGMs into Ukraine in number, because up to about a month ago it was a slow trickle. Only one, ONE! NATO nation has provided MANPADS in the form of Stingers to Ukraine and that is the Baltic state of Lithuania (very nice of them since they probably couldn't afford to give them away as they'll likely need them). How many Stingers has the USA sent to Ukraine, zero. Why? Because we don't want to provoke the Russians too much, because we're weak and we know it. We simply don't have the military forces in Europe to effectively counter the Russians and halt any advance into the Eastern NATO member states. We may not have enough in our military at this point to retake those areas once they are captured either. We would waste some of our best active duty troops as essentially blood sacrifices early on in any Russian invasion. We'd end up having to draft young men, and have you seen young American men in this country lately? Fat, drug addicted, mental issue, criminal records, lazy, and raised in a safe space society is what our draft pool consists of right now. Also, we need to make a decision, is Asia important or is Europe important to the USA and our way of life? We can't fight a two theater war unless we're willing to significantly increase defense spending and that means either more deficit spending or a making some real hard choices like cutting Social Security benefits. I really am at a loss as to why so many here are so Gun Ho about taking an aggressive posture with Russia, with what exactly do you use to do that? A few thousand troops? 4 F-16s from Denmark? I have said and I continue to maintain that we should have sat this one out and left the Ukraine to its own fate while using this as wake-up call to get NATO's ass in gear, because we literally can't do this ourselves right now, we need NATO to step up and the only way they'll do that is if they are scared shitless. The invasion of the Ukraine by Russia may ironically be the best thing right now to strengthen NATO. However, it's not a for sure thing that NATO will be strengthened they may just roll over and show their belly even more to the Russians leaving us to hold the line by ourselves. We're in a Roman Empire situation. We have barbarians on our borders (China, Russia, ongoing GWOT) and we're spread thin as our society becomes increasingly decadent and soft. Some hard choices need to be made, everybody wants to be an Empire until it's time to do Empire shit. |
