I got my availability for Pre-order on 2/23 and put the deposit down immediately. In the last week I’ve been reading up on all the current information I can find and chomping at the bit for a “your system is ready to build email”.

Somehow, Elon's wheels will come off. I don't think the establishment will allow him to do what he's doing. This will disrupt too many megamonopolies. It's sorta like trying to use solar and Tesla walls to go off grid. You are no longer assisting in the socialist publics infrastructure and if too many people do it, it falls apart.
I am going to go out on a limb and say (soon) Starlink will be heavily taxed by the FCC - "for the greater good". No way Comcrap and the rest will let this happen. |

Not that anyone cares, but I'm back from an internet hiatus of over a month. In that time, life has happened. One of the good things that happened in life is that my Starlink arrived and I installed it and its mostly awesome. Particulars: Bonner County, Idaho (North Panhandle) 3 miles as the crow flies from the Selle Valley Starlink ground station. I've got open sky to the east and south, tight trees west and north. The install was easy, EXCEPT that the damned choke on the cable is huge so you need a big old hole. Garmin makes rubber grommets that fill the hole nicely, but they are six buck each. The high powered POE is not amenable to easy extension since you'd need to power the POE injector at cable end. What does that mean? For me, it means I have obstructions because I was location limited by cable length. The app is pretty neat - I can tell exactly which 80 foot cedar and tamarack trees need to be removed for better coverage. It runs at 100MBPS until it's obstructed. The app tells me that's about 30 minutes per 24 hours. For streaming video, that's not an issue since buffering covers the gap, but for live stuff, it makes it intolerable. I've got a ubiquiti edgerouterx set up with a failover to my existing lte modem, and it works pretty well, but when the ground is dry, I'll be killing three trees (I need to remove two of them anyhow) and that should make it all work. The top graph shows when it drops out. Its often. As more satellites are added, this will improve, but for now, it's chainsaw time. I'd drop them now, but its too muddy to deal with them. If we get a hard freeze again this spring, I'll do it then. The potential is there. If I had 100 more feet of cable, that would work too. I'm debating building an enclosure for the injector and running power to it. That would be a good temporary solution.  Attached File |

Even though I live in a suburban area I ordered Starlink. You can too if you get in early.
They say it's not meant for city users because they have coverage already, the urban internet speeds are good and Starlink can't handle the bandwidth for a dense population of users. But Starlink can still cover a limited number of users in any given area, including my suburban area. So they are letting people sign up, first come-first served. Why wouldn't they? Their satellites are already flying overhead of cities so why not let us poor urbanites use them? I live in northeast Florida. We have Comcast and AT&T here, maybe others. AT&tT won't run fiber to my neighborhood, so the most they can provide is 10MB down with DSL. I have Comcast and they are constantly raising their rates, up to $82 a month for 100MB down and they will just keep creeping up. So suck it comcast. |

Starlink FCC application reveal plans for satellite internet in moving vehicles
"The idea of Teslas being connected to the internet through Starlink may soon before a reality, with SpaceX recently filing an application to the FCC to expand the satellite service to “moving vehicles, vessels, and aircraft.” The application comes not long after Musk gave the nod on Twitter for a Starlink “Mini,” which could provide internet connectivity on the go. In its FCC application, SpaceX aimed to acquire a blanket license authorizing the operation of end-user earth stations for deployment dubbed as Vehicle-Mounted Earth Stations (“VMESs”), Earth Stations on Vessels (“ESVs”), and Earth Stations Aboard Aircraft (“ESAAs”). Collectively called Earth Stations in Motion (“ESIMs”), these stations would have the capability to bring internet connectivity to moving vehicles like cars, ships, or even aircraft. “SpaceX Services seeks authority to deploy and operate these earth stations (1) as VMES throughout the United States and its territories, (2) as ESVs in the territorial waters of the United States and throughout international waters worldwide, and (3) as ESAAs on U.S.-registered aircraft operating worldwide and non-U.S.-registered aircraft operating in U.S. airspace,” SpaceX noted. Interesting article. It sounds like the politicians in Vermont are commies and expect broadband to be free. There is an unverified statement that Starlink can now support 50 users per cell and a cell covers two towns....which is an ambiguous area. |

Maybe the people who write article only seek comments from commie socialist types, but this article and the one above from Vermont do not make the people there look like Americans. "That could be ideal for rural Mainers, but one of the state’s leading broadband advocates expressed concerns about Starlink’s cost, reliability and potential to kill momentum for more community-minded broadband projects." "In terms of statewide broadband policy, however, she has some questions. Starlink is a welcome option for Mainers in hard-to-reach locations and for those who don’t like their current internet service provider. It’s an expensive option, though, and it doesn’t address the issue of equity. “We want to make sure everybody has broadband,” she said, “so that no matter what your economic status is, you have access to this tool for education, for working, for health care, for community and civic activity.”" The last comment is just asinine: Education....go to school. SpaceX Starlink beta testers see big speed boosts, major outages
"A portion of the thousands of consumers participating in SpaceX’s “Better Than Nothing” Starlink beta test have begun to see massive speed boosts at the cost of equally significant network instability. In its current state, SpaceX’s ever-growing constellation of Starlink satellites regularly vacillates between inspiring awe and nail-pulling frustration between users. Still firmly stuck in the process of beta testing, SpaceX engineers are almost constantly tweaking parameters and software and performing a variety of tests on the live network, ranging from geographically-limited trials with a few satellites to network-wide updates. On February 22nd, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk revealed plans to upgrade the Starlink network and “double” download speeds to ~300 megabits per second (Mbps) – more than three times the global average for a wired connection. I've definitely seen the speeds up here and there, but haven't noticed longer outages. I'm still fighting trees. I'm actually going to relocate the dish over the weekend and mount it on a 30' crank up HAM tower to see how much that helps. I'm happy enough with the speed at 100, but I'm definitely NOT a heavy data user. 25MBPS and stable would be a nice thing. |

Received my dish this past Monday. Due to work schedule I haven't set it up yet...I've seen reports on reddit about setting it up temporarily then moving it and it not reconnecting after...so I figured I'd wait until I can get my hopefully permanent spot ready.. I've been working on building a custom mount using rmc, unistrut, and angle iron.
