Other than some kind of tat a man got while in the .mil tattoos were largely confined to the criminal element, sailors, or the odd-ball fringe members of society.
I just figured they are popular now because peeps have run out of outlets to express themselves that do not smack of the way generations that have gone before them expressed their selves. LOL....Can't be dressing like James Dean, wearing flowers in your hair, and the grunge look has passed. |

I’m a “pure skin” but my wife has a few small tattoos. I have no desire to get any, but you do you. Tattoos CAN be an indicator of people that make bad life choices like just about any other appearance choices. Difference is that tattoos are basically permanent. I know some people that have tattoos that are perfectly normal, successful people. I also have known people with tattoos that were totall pieces of shit. I will say just from my own personal sample size that people with neck and face tattoos are usually walking the line and have a huge “LOOk AT ME!!!!” complex. And probably a felony rap sheet……

Let me explain it to you, OP.
First, a little background. I'm 67 years old, and have a large tattoo I had done 45 years ago. At that time, tattoos were a sign of rebellion, and were looked down upon because they most often symbolized gang membership or antisocial activities. They were not done by Barbie and Ken to commemorate their honeymoon in Cancun. The cultural norm until about 25 years ago was that tattoos signified criminal behavior, poor education, and low IQ. THIS IS WHAT WE WERE TAUGHT, just as younger people today are taught to think the same of anyone who smokes cigarettes. In 'polite society', tattoos were hidden, just as smokers often conceal their habit now. I understand the concept that tattoos can signify something meaningful and very personal. Mine is an Asian dragon, a symbol of the ancient legend of the Dragon Seeking the Pearl. The allegory is of a rough beast in search of perfect beauty, the flawed primitive seeking perfection. It still has meaning to me. What I DON'T like about the majority of tattoos I see today is how trite and poorly-executed they are. Sorry, the woman with the barely-recognizable tattoos of SpongeBob and Dora on her forearms, or a huge monochrome chandelier on her chest, looks like shit. It's not a 'boomer' thing (God, how I despise that blanket condemnation), it's a reaction to idiocracy. A beautifully-executed tattoo with timeless meaning looks fine to me. Covering yourself with tattoos like a NASCAR driving suit, which will all be dated and unfashionable in ten years, is just dumb. |

What a whiny thread.
I thought people with tattoos were supposed to be tough? |

I personally have no problem with tattoos.
Some are truly fascinating and interesting. Most are not. That said I haven’t ever had a desire to have one. What I do have issues with are people who use them as a vehicle to draw attention to themselves. If it were not a tattoo it would be something else. Most scream out “HEY LOOK AT ME I WANT TO BE UNIQUE JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!” especially on women. I also do not understand why a person would get a tattoo they can’t see. I saw a girl at the beach with a bow tattooed on the backside of each leg below her butt. What’s the point? There also seems to be a correlation in most communities between the number of payday loan places, pay by the week used car lots, and tattoo & piercing parlors. |

I dont think its a phobia for me. I can see them and not freak out. I can touch them and not be weirded out. In my opinion ( and I know thats all it is, an opinion ) other than significant stuff like remembrances for family members, proud service in military etc, I think they are just gross. Unattractive.
I also think its weird to draw human skulls, dragons etc on yourself. How does that seem mentally healthy? |

Use to tattoos were a visual indicator for people who had issues or made bad decisions; criminal behavior, drugs, personality disorders, bad credit/payday loan chasers, furniture renters, mayonaise sandwitches......
