Why the fuck was he prescribed oxy and percs for PTSD?

Two possibilities come to mind.

1.  he is simply a druggie with uncle sugar picking up the tab and he wanted drugs and VA gave it to him so he would go away and be quiet.
2.  he was actually discharged for an injury (back most likely) which he claimed caused so much pain he couldn't stay in anymore and that was what they are treating.

Do some reading.  The easiest way to explain is to use a Junkie phrase of the "warm blanket". Opioids bind with receptors that create a sense of stress free well being.  A very close friend just weaned himself of of about 10 years of Oxy's....all prescribed by Uncle Sugar.

Here's a discussion on the topic

On the other hand, don't prescribe and have this headline the next day,

WOUNDED WARRIOR HERO VETERAN MARINE WITH PTSD DENIED PAIN MEDICATION BY VA TO TREAT HIS DISABILITY EARNED WHILE IN COMBAT IN KUWAIT!!!!

Nobody makes these guys take the pain meds.

On the contrary. Pain meds, opioids, are insidious.  They are phenomenal at the start to reduce pain and PTS. The problem, of course, is that they're creating junkies....legal junkies.  The VA also hands these things out like candy.

Agree with the bullshit headline but isn't that way it always is with the media?

Vet wants the drugs.  Give it to him and your problems go away or deny them (for all the right reasons) and deal with 10,000 complaints that could get you fired.

Good point. The "what to do" question is a tough one. What SOCOM has had success with is pulling guys back into the community to serve. There are SOF vets serving as civilians in Fed LE support roles as analysts, cyber crime, etc...give men a reason to remain relevant and in close proximity to fellow war fighters.

O3 and 11's?  I don't know but we're going to have to figure it out because this nation is in for generational sustained combat.  The "long war" wasn't bullshit.

Also, I'm not defending this particular guy. He very well be a piece of shit. I'm speaking in general terms re PTS, based on some of the ignorant comments in this thread.  It's fucking Memorial Day for God's sake.

This guy wasn't infantry.

The fact is there is probably zero correlation between infantry and PTSD.  In fact, I'll go ahead and say infantryman probably have a lower occurance of PTSD because they joined to fight and not for college money.

Pogues just enlisted for the money/bennies and a fake ass disability is just another bennie to a pogue.

I'd like to see the numbers to verify my suspicion

the fact this guy was a pothead before he enlisted was probably a bigger factor in his PTSD than his actual combat experience.

More news here

bluf.

women in the civilian world are twice as likely to get PTSD than men.

Men and women in the military get PTSD at the same rates despite the fact that men constitute 97% of the casualties and are far more likely to experience real combat and have more exposure to PTSD inducing events?

The way back machine

In 2010 the God-King Obama (PBUH) changed the rules so that you didn't actually have to experience a traumatic event to be diagnosed with PTSD.

Merely fear of a traumatic event was enough to give you PTSD.

Curious to see how the rates changed after this little pen stroke.

Did you guys ever look up the stats on alcoholism?

Excessive alcohol consumption is known to kill about 88,000 people in the United States each year, but a study released by the CDC and The Lewin Group shows that it has a huge impact on our wallets as well.

The cost of excessive alcohol consumption in the United States reached $223.5 billion in 2006 or about $1.90 per drink. Almost three-quarters of these costs were due to binge drinking. Binge drinking is defined as consuming four or more alcoholic beverages per occasion for women or five or more drinks per occasion for men, and is the most common form of excessive alcohol consumption in the United States.

The researchers found that the cost of excessive drinking was quite far-reaching, reflecting the effect this dangerous behavior has on many aspects of the drinker’s life and on the lives of those around them. The costs largely resulted from losses in workplace productivity (72% of the total cost), health care expenses for problems caused by excessive drinking (11% of total), law enforcement and other criminal justice expenses related to excessive alcohol consumption (9% of total), and motor vehicle crash costs from impaired driving (6% of the total).

The study analyzed national data from multiple sources to estimate the costs due to excessive drinking in 2006, the most recent year for which data were available. The study did not consider a number of other costs such as those because of pain and suffering among either the excessive drinker or others that were affected by their drinking, and thus may be an underestimate.

Nevertheless, the researchers estimated that excessive drinking cost $746 for every man, woman, and child in the United States in 2006.

The cost to society due to alcohol use is staggering.

Why are we not banning it?

Freedom is secondary to all of us banning stuff that's "bad."

Bad stuff must not be tolerated!

Whole lotta truth is this statement.

Lady we know just got back from Colorado.  Mid 40's.  She smoked a little as a teen.  Hasn't been high since then.  As a novelty she bought 1 thc gummy in CO. Broke it in half.  Proceeded to tell us how this was stronger than anything she had ever smoked in her life.  Said it scared her how strong it was.(standing by for stoners to tell me in what particular way she is wrong or doesn't know)

You want to legalize the wildwood flower....whatever.

This bioengeered, genetically modified stuff they are producing today, catering to stoners...be careful what you wish for.  Stoners will come up with every possible reason about their liberties being infringed for the chase of getting a better high, someday legally.  Muh liberty, muh freedom.
