Question: Does the US military maintain SN records of rifles once they go off to war?
Would it be possible, at least hypothetically, to take one of those M16s and run the SN against some database and figure out who it was last issued to and when (maybe even where) it went missing? |

View Quote There was a digital records transition a few years back. If those SNs survived the transition, we can tell you the last unit who owned the item and theoretically when it was lost. If the records did not survive the transition, it is possible - but much less likely - to find their provenance through old paper records. At that point it's just easier to torch'em. So we do. I've witnessed proofs that US-marked weapons found in Iraq were lost or captured during WW2. We don't keep global track of who was assigned what weapon. That happens at the unit level. Nowadays if it's found, and there is a serial number on it, I can have the BDE, BN, or Company Commander on the phone within 20 minutes to inform them we found their missing gear. That can turn into a fun day. A few months ago I found a NBC mask. I called the Commander and he told me somebody would be by to pick it up later. On the way to lunch I saw some random private low crawling across the parking lot at the next motorpool over. An hour later that same soldier low crawled into my office, stood up, and told me he was there for a NBC mask. I don't think he will lose anything ever again. |
