Julian Röpcke ?@JulianRoepcke

Today is #Putin's birthday.
I guess this is one reason for the - tactically premature - #Assad/#Russian offensive. Deadly for regime troops.

From a tactical point of view, 2 more weeks of intense Russian air strikes on the front would have been necessary, before that offensive.

Furthermore, it seems the Russians lack the intelligence capability to identify rebels setting up those AT missile launchers.

Some of it might have been stock footage, but they did launch missiles from Caspian Sea.  Several videos from Iraq showing the missiles fly over are pretty much proof of that.

What NeedMoreAmmo is saying is that they didn't target ISIS.  That is hard to determine for sure.  Russia is going to target anyone who opposes Assad, be it FSA or ISIL/ISIS

I think you're right. Watching it again, it looks like the explosion is about on line with the two stumps/poles you see in the video. The tank main gun fires shortly after the explosion.

Only one hit. The first missile looks to have detonated before it reached the tank, you can tell by the blast profile.

It was something off the front of the tank (a spare bit of track, a fender skirt, etc.).

It's amazing that 3 guys exited the tank during/after the brew up. The commander was probably a real crispy critter after crawling out of the flames.

I use to think that the wide variety of news sources was a good thing.  That we'd all benefit from the "everyone a journalist" idea, with all kinds of new information coming to light.

I'm not so optimistic any more.  It seems like most news sources are just reporting what other news agencies have reported, and using those multiple reports to claim that the information is authentic.  And then you drill down and it all came from one post on the Chinese equivalent of The Onion, or from a state-owned propaganda station.   This places the burden of identifying accurate information on the reader, and with the nested reporting, this burden is essentially impossible for a working person to handle.

It doesn't matter if they are friendly, it matters if they are useful. Many of the allies the US has had over the years weren't pro-US even at the best of times. If US policy regarding the Assad regime is to overthrow him, then there are limited number of resources to use to do this without direct US intervention. For those that think Assad is the strongman that Syria needs to hold things together, remember he is directly 100% responsible for the Syrian Civil War emerging from Arab Spring protests.

Tartarstan only has Kh35 capability, and those lack the range.  Dagestan's 3K14s are not the same as the 3M54s the three corvettes can carry.  So max 32 for the flotilla onboard.

The missiles would have been the long range subsonic land attack version of the Klub cruise missile family.

The
Klub family is a modular family of different cruise missiles tasked for
different roles depending on their motors and guidance systems.

Some
members of this family of missiles are used for attacking surface
warships, and others for attacking submarines.  Those that are used to
attack surface warships typically skim close to the sea, but have a
supersonic terminal phase.  Those used to attack submarines are short
range, sometimes supersonic, and launch a light anti-submarine torpedo
into the sea near the point where the submarine has been spotted.

The
land attack version of the Klub used in this attack uses a combination
of inertial and satellite guidance and in order to achieve a longer
range (up to 2,500 km is claimed) uses a turbojet as opposed to a rocket
engine to fly subsonically at Mach 0.8.

Lastly, it is significant that the Russians have chosen to launch
their missiles from the Caspian Sea rather than the Mediterranean (land
based versions of long range cruise missiles are prohibited by the 1987
Intermediate Nuclear Forces ("INF”) Treaty).

The choice of the
Caspian Sea is dictated by the political situation.  The US has very
powerful fleet and intelligence assets in the Mediterranean - as do US
allies such as Israel.  Launching their missiles from the Caspian Sea
enables the Russians to do so without outside observation
or interference.
