Conventional?

China.

Would be very bad for us for a future conflict.

Why?

China would get modern military practice and an arms race of 2-5 years would narrow the gap we have with them in weapons tech.

Muslim Hordes are crushed and become a thing only seen in history books. Mankind branches out and we take our crusade into the stars and we conquer everything in our sight.

Rome lasted long enough to qualify as a success, and their fragmentation and collapse was due to internal cultural and demographic decay (a forbidden subject to discuss in geopolitics).

People also tend to forget that the real source of Roman power as an Empire was Egypt. Italy was only part of the machine that was Rome.

The big question is how will China replenish it's oil/gasoline reserves.  India "should" be able to blockade oil coming through the Indian Ocean from the middle-east.  Will Russia help resupply China with oil through pipelines in Siberia and Kazakhstan?  Maybe, maybe not.  There are a lot of countries in that region that would like to see China drop a notch or two.

If China cannot quickly dominate India than India may have the advantage.

I'm going with China. They appear to put more investment in their military, and it is largely localized so there may be some advantage if the war is prolonged. Neither are that great though, and many parts of China are just as dirty and poor as the poor parts of India. I believe even as far back as a few years ago, half the Chinese population didn't have electricity.

the part about the USA is true, but inst most of the chicom pop on its east coast?  India has more coast line and from what i understand more of a true blue water navy.  honestly it wouldn't stay conventional because not that they are equally matched but i think logistically they both seriously lack  the ability to move assets around and keep them reliably supplied.  they both have nukes and cover large amounts of territory with like said previously lack of ability to move around mil assets quickly due to the serious lack of basic infrastructure to even maintain convoys of light vehicles.  Canned sunshine would be eventually opened its just a question who pulls the tab first.

point but the vietnamese had tens of thousands of experienced, battle hardened troops that knew exactly how to fight in their terrain after a decade of fighting the American not long before as well as the civil war the reerupted after the americans departure, a well as near constant border squabbles with camboadia and laos in that era. the chinese military on the other hand in 1980 had basically zero troops with any actual combat experience. history has the proven that fucking with the vietnamese is usually a bad idea.

China wins if its 1 v 1. But it wouldn’t go down like that. My bet is that initially India gets beat up, but then the rest of the Asian countries join in against China and prop up India. I think the US will keep Pakistan out of the conflict.  India could fairly easily limit chinas oil resupplys.  However it ends up the world wins.

aside from some backwater airports and fairly small settlements there isn't much there. the tibetan plateau for the most part is incredibly desolate. makes the grasslands of the russian steppes look lush by comparison. hell it's one the indias biggest assets in a war with china, before the chinese even start to contend with one of the largest, most rugged mountain ranges in the world they have to first deal with some of the most desolate flatlands in the world first. india happens to luck out and be on the correct side of the himlayas weather wise.

German immigrants. Ironic.
Germanic immigration was only a very small part of late Roman demographic and cultural problems. We talk about it because it was the most scary-looking problem Rome faced, and it was the scapegoat Roman governments often used to escape blame for less flashy but more dooming problems.

People immigrated to Rome from all over the world in numbers and variety that neutralized Roman social cohesiveness. The Roman welfare state also greatly suppressed productivity and vigor in the Roman population, and over the span of generations altered the composition of the population into complete dysfunction. These are the more troublesome problems that rotted the core of Rome beyond recovery.

There are basically three major grand-views of geopolitics:

Sea Power as suggested by Alfred Thayer Mahan. The defining work for this theory is The Influence of Sea Power upon History. It holds that ports, control of sea lanes that feed economies, and the ability to efficiently project power over vast regions are major factors in the success and failure of nations.

Heartland theory as suggested by Sir Halford John Mackinder. The defining work for this theory is The Geographical Pivot of History. It holds that the configuration of Asia-Europe as a single gigantic landmass with vast resources makes it possible for a world-dominating power to form beyond the reach of Sea Power. The crucial area that a power must control to implement this approach is called the Heartland, and is basically inland Europe and Asia. For this reason it is crucial that a Sea Power prevent the Heartland from falling under the control of a opposing power.

Rimland theory as suggested by Nicholas Spykman. The defining work for this theory is The Geography of the Peace. It holds that power is most concentrated in the coastal regions around Eurasia, where the stream of resources flowing out and wealth flowing in converge. For this reason, dominating Rimland allows control of both the Heartland and Sea Power.

These are very brief summaries and skip many important details and conclusions. All three theories are worth detailed study.
View Quote
If only there was an empire that had all 3 theories working to its benefit....imagine what it could do if it had:

* Most powerful agricultural and industrial heartland, with ideal rainfall and rivers
* Multiple coastlines with unfettered access to the major oceans and continents of the world via those coastlines, filled with sea ports
* Control of sea lanes with a vast, nuclear-powered Navy, filled with carrier strike groups and the best trained and equipped combat resources on the planet

I nation like that wouldn't need to exert typical dictatorial influence over the world to influence the balance of power.  They would just award and punish foreign nations with inclusion or exclusion in their trade empire.

For all the folks wanting China to invade Russia, China would get the shit kicked out of it. China does not have the national character required to successfully execute an offensive land war outside of its borders.

Russia is in shit shape and has never been all that competent by European standards, but that's by European standards. In a defensive war with China where they can trade land for time, they will chew the PLA up into tiny bits and four hours later they'll be hungry for another division.

China couldn't even invade Vietnam, despite Vietnam being broke, unmobilized and improperly deployed to defend from a northern invasion at the time. The Russians would fuck them in a way that would require censorship for indecency.

The Wokou Pirates were Japanese (and then Chinese/Japanese) Vikings, more or less, raided the shit out of China and Korea in the 1300's-1500's.  Defeated following the maturity of gunpowder weapons on the mainland, which they didn't have access to.

I think the Chinese could be trained to be adequate infantry, and they could field incredible numbers.
