I've never been a fan of optics on lever guns; this is as far as I'm willing to go with it. Marlin 1895TSBL trapper FTW.

Brenneke Black Magic Magnum's are no slouch at 602 grains/1502 fps at the muzzle. 6+1 in my 870 tactical and I even have the 1895'esque ghost ring sights. Also have the versatility of taking small game with birdshot as well. There is also the Dixie IXL-DGS at 870 grains/1200fps at the muzzle. View Quote Is your shotgun pure sex ? No, it's a fucking shotgun! This is about Lever guns, nobody gives 2 shits about your slugs and gun. |

I've kinda been wanting a CVA Scout 2 in 45-70.
Not sure why. Just looks like fun. |

I found some nickel plated cases, so I'm alpha.
I hope the bears hold back long enough that I can find a rifle and box of loaded ammunition. |

45/70 is worth the time to reload. I'm figuring it costs me about 18 cents per round for plinking ammo, not counting the cost of the case which is amortized over it's useful life. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Bought an 1895 GBL .45-70 Government and probably will never use it to hunt but there it is. You certainly can't plink with these things as a box of ammo runs $30.00 and up. I also own a Springfield trapdoor (1873) The .45-70 may be an oldie but it's a "goodie." Attached File |

Henry Rifles is offering their single shots with the steel receiver in .45-70. That is damn tempting. I find this talk of ".45-70 Master Race" humorous; given the bullshit I got when I bought my Marlin 1895 in 1978. "You're not going to be able to find ammo for it." , "What do you want with something like that?!?" , "What is that gonna do that my .30-30 won't do?" , "That ain't got the range my .270 has. Hell, it can kill a deer over in the next parish!" "That thing is gonna blow a deer into pieces! Won't find anything to eat! Should have saved you money and bought a .30-30 like mine." , LAUGHING "BOY! Ain't seen no buffalo round these parts for many a year now!" https://assets.henryusa.com/uploads/rifles/H015-Single-Shot-Rifle-Hero.jpg View Quote |

Keep the tube loaded and the action empty. Little known fact that the only sound more terrifying then racking the slide on a pump shotgun is cycling the lever on a .45-70. Bear should stop cold and maybe even piss themselves when they hear that .45-70 action close View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Maybe not so alpha when the bear is at the door unless I use the 12 gauge. If I'm expecting one of those big bastards, I'm grabbing the .375 Weatherby and the .358 Norma. |

45-70 Marlin guide gun.
45-90 Pedro Sharps 45-110 Shiloh Sharps. |

The people claiming .45-70 is overkill are cute. 405 grain bullet, 1200 fps(assuming original spec load). Cheap 12 gauge deer slug , 1 ounce at 1200 fps. 1 ounce is 437.5 grains. The two are very close...but the rifle is easier to shoot well. View Quote |

Looks like a good reason to pick one up. |

Just got an email back from Henry. For anyone else curious, the single shots are NOT approved for top end Ruger level loads but are approved for Marlin loads. Still plenty of power, and likely not fun to shoot in a gun that light.
