You really need to do a Baer frame once you get it figured out.

I may happen to know where to lay my hands on one.

Indeed. Case coloring is a dark art requiring sacrifices and ancient ritess to pagan gods in order to get the most beautiful array of colors.

That always seemed to help. The more it bubbled, the better the colors came out.

Looks pretty good.

A suggestion for next time.....don't bring the temp down, go straight from the oven and in to the aerated and chilled water. Also, make sure that the parts are packed vertically in the crucible and drop straight into the water.

Little things can make a big difference. Unfortunately it's an art not a science.

I would love to do a set of car headers like that.

They pretty much take on that look right at the heads anyway, would be cool to have that finish all the way down the tubes.

I could easily be wrong but I think those were case colored, not true color case hardened.

OP-I agree, a CCH 1911 would be beautiful-what would be even better, start with a low value beater Browning A5, CCH the receiver, blue the barrel and replace the wood.

Do hit it with some oil before you handle it too much.  One guy at school managed to get some red and he handled it without oiling.  Buh bye red.

In my experience it always made the warping worse....

If you do a receiver I would suggest using a threaded mandrel through the center. Unless you do a lever gun then I can send you some jig prints

What ive been reading is the quench is the magic part in getting the colors, Guys are using jigs that have shields on them to block the water getting a slower cool down. Fast cool down gives you browns/no color slower gives you blues and purples. Im going to try using the crucible cap as the shield/brake then the shotgun action follows it into the tank.

This what they are getting with shields..

also dropping from 1350 to 1100 helps combat warping.

Yep-the case coloring I mentioned. I have a 10 gauge set up the same way. Pretty, but not the same. Not sure what the case was with the old Marlins.

If I may be honest, those look like ass.

The only case hardened gun I've had was a Perazzi. That thing was beautiful. Wish I had taken a decent pic before I sold it.

that CH shown duplicates a lot of the late 1800s Winchesters I've seen, and is period-correct.
I have a Turnbull-hardened USFA with beautiful brown/blue/gold colors; very understated elegance. I like the old A.H. Fox colors a lot.

Just out of curiosity how would one get say a 1911 frame almost completely blueish? Also what are the steps for after you heat the metal?

Thanks in advance.
