So, is the Harbor Freight 3500w inverter genny a Honda clone or something else?

Here is an info/comparison page I found listing several different small generator models. Not a lot of info necessarily but might be helpful:

To my eyes it looks like both the HF Predator and Quip-All versions copied the Yamaha 80CC engine. The Q-A's DC alternator(mounted back side of engine) looks to be identical to the Yamaha's also but the inverter box looks to be a copy of the Honda's. I don't have the HF Predator to look at, just Honda and Quip-All plus some online diagrams so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I did look at a Sportsman 2000W inverter and it was a different design altogether.
|
|
|
Note: I'm using "80cc" to describe all of the 79.x CC engines.
The Westinghouse, Homelite, Paladin, and Milbank "side plug" (my term, think Yamaha style) generators are all made by ZHEJIANG EVERLAST POWER CO.,LTD. I'm not sure the name of the original manufacturer for the Duromax / Pulsar / Quip-All / Predator / Westinghouse iGen series, but they all appear to be just about the same (80cc) except for the higher wattage models (such as iGen 2500) having a 98cc engine. There is also a 80cc Duromax model that is 80cc but uses dual fuel (propane or gasoline). |

ON the digital inverter I put a wheel kit I ordered from amazon on mine.
open box was $28 I think. money well spent. I'm overall impressed with the unit. RatPatrol ran a larger champion for damn near 29 days straight so I'm hopeful for these Champion units. |

A few cheats to make it easier.
1) If there is a knob and two on/off switches on the unit, the unit can be run dry by turning the fuel knob off and leaving the power switch on. 2) If there is a knob and only one on/off switch, the on/off switch is for ECO mode. These units cannot have the fuel turned off to run the carb dry without modification. 3) Electric start is rare in units under 2800 watt. 4) Pull out chokes seem to be more durable in the smaller units than sliding lever chokes. 5) If two generator have the same engine size (let's say 80cc), it is unlikely that one will be considerably more powerful than the other. Differences are either a matter of allowing the engine to be run harder or allowing the inverter to be run hotter or both. 6) Small wheels and grass don't mix 7) Some units run off of propane and gasoline. In these cases, assume 10% - 15% less power when running on propane. In other words, if the generator is advertised as being 2000 starting watts and 1600 running watts, figure 1700 - 1800 starting watts and 1360 - 1440 running watts while using propane. 8) 240 volt AC is what you need to run most serious household stuff (dryer, home air conditioners, stove, etc). Only the very high end (5kw and up) inverter generators put out 240vac. These units are very expensive, costing 3 - 10 times as much as their traditional generator equivalents. |

More easy reference info:
Engine Size - Recommended Generator Wattage (max) 53cc - 1kw 80 - 100cc - 2kw 120 - 170cc - 2.5 - 3kw 171 - 220cc - 3 - 3.5kw If you see a 53cc engine in a generator claiming to be a 2kw or higher generator, don't buy it. |

You might also consider the wattage rating of these budget inverters with a little skepticism if you are comparing to something established like the Honda. The Honda EU2000i is rated at 1600W continuous, 2000W maximum for 30 minutes per the manual and seems to be capable of this. IME it will handle surges of 2200W with the red overload light coming on for 4 maybe 5 seconds, 4 seconds of red overload light on being acceptable per the manual.

Use a probe when it is making the noise to push on various parts (like a screwdriver, or your finger if it isn’t hot and you are brave) to see if the noise quits. Sometimes parts can be loose when the fastener isn’t.
In that case, return it, don’t bother wrenching on it. ETA: Does it do that under load? |
