Update 2/8

Not a lot of photos today.  We did get a lot done, but it was a short day and time flashed by.  Kids were in a good mood and many spent time reading the newspaper article I posted up on the board.  We had a very good time today, even though it was short.

Vent going in......

We like where we are at with the turbines, and also got some base paint on inside.

We've got a good plan on some details nside the turbines.  Those pieces are about ready to paint.

Shock stack cover and landing gear cover also got close to finished.

Amazing how good it is looking now that you are getting it together and getting some base coats on.  The engine exhaust nozzles look awesome.

Thank you, when we get to this point it really starts to excite students.  Everyone can see that we are getting close and that we may actually get something that looks like a blackhawk by the time we are done.

The problem comes when things start to stand out that are wrong.  Things are so right, that every little thing like the cowlings or window mistakes stick out.  I told the kids this means we did a good job because if it wasn't close, the little things wouldn't stick out so bad.

Love  these comments on on the latest helo video on Facebook from Seniors from last year.  These guys were the major players in building the train.  They know this circus way too well. ....

I miss them.

I think we have to cut it in half and extend it about 1/4 of an inch

I'd say by now you have some of the students that participated in these projects well out of college, right?   So gonna have to start doing some alumni reunions!

So, a couple of weeks ago, I ended up spending the better part of a week hanging with some Aircraft Mechanics.

During one of our breaks, I pulled out my phone and started showing some of the guys pictures of your Blackhawk.
I got some of the questions you're already used to by now, "This is a COLLEGE class, right?" etc.

But the funniest one was when I was describing some of the efforts you were making to get it to look just right. One of the mechanics said, "Well, when it's flying, nobody will be able to see." That's when I realized he thought this was an R/C model. So, tell the kids at least one aircraft mechanic thinks she looks like she'll fly.

You asked.  There's another couple things, but this is the biggest one:

Shock/landing gear is Too "plumbing elbow"   Should have flat flange/plate or at least a triangular bracket to lever "through" tying the horizontal damper with the vertical shock.   I think if you just put a couple random flat pieces or spokes in a tetrahedral fashion to obscure the plumbing curve it's be enough.

The front wheel has a different system, as it turns fully, so a way to keep it from being pushed sidewas is on it, as a flange up top, and a plate version of this, I'll try to find more images.

The problem created, however is a Mind bender.  I used to be able to search for things related to blackhawks and Marine One without a problem.  Something in internet broke, now the only results I get are photos posted in this thread, and links to this thread.

Update 2/11

With many of the details on the top finished and not needing the proportional references to the fuselage, we pulled it off and worked on some fuselage details.

The landing gear cowlings needed lowered.

We also marked and cut down the hanging loops, making them less obnoxious.
He is reinstalling them in this picture.

Students sanded and tried to smooth out the skin on the top.

More details for the turbine cowling

We also flipped the fuselage upside down to work on the details on the bottom.  Here our Electrical/Mechanical engineer in training from Rob poetics is showing me his plan for the door mechanism.

We will begin installing parts of the framework soon.

Update 2/12

We got the first coat of paint on the "Rocket Sled".  We need to flip it over tomorrow and work on the parts we missed.

We worked on what we think are the steps that extend out on Marine One's underside.
They are different on both sides.

We didn't get quite finished with the cover.

We also got both front quarter windows reshaped, and they look marvelous.

Somehow that picture turned out blurry.

We are dangerously low on rivets again.    Someone suggested me might find some thumb tacks locally with the same 7mm size head.  I might look around.  We salvaged a few that won't show after the steps are installed.    The windows are going to need to have them line the outer edges when we get closer to finished.

I guess it's a gift......

We think either the motor wore out, or possibly a bad connection to the solar panel is the culprit.  The other prop still runs.

As for our helicopter,  I realized early this morning about 3:30am, we for got to sculpt the bumps in front of the intakes.    We had the stuff set out Friday, and a student selected, and I guess we forgot .

We will have to address that before anymore paint goes on.  Ooops.

Update 2/13

It felt like we didn't get much done today, as we mostly did prep work for more paint on the fuselage and rocket sled.

The bumps in front of the intakes.  They need some blending with paper mache.

We are getting close on the forward landing gear cowlings.

The retractable steps .....and plenty of rivets.  We are also prepping the areas for the pods on the bottom.

We also got some base blackhawk paint on the starboard side of the tail.   We will have to airbrush a more subtle transition.

HMX-1 logo is looking great.

Update 2/14

The tshirts always make me smile.
Second coat going on the bottom.  We are beginning to plan out our details and how we want the paint to fade.

Base coat of Blackhawk side.....

We decided to see how the fade was going to work with FB41's airbrush he sent us last year.  You can see how we kind of want this to fade from one to the other.

May need to have a little softer transition, but we found out we can do it, and the consistency of paint we need to make it work.

I grabbed two different tints for the glass at lunch.  We are going to try 20% and maybe use 35% in a couple areas.   We will mess with those this afternoon.  They polished up the windows this morning to get them all ready.

Little more Valentine's Day update.

I'm reminding students that just because we are adding some base coat paint, we are not done with details.  We won't get everything, but will try to get as many as we can. This includes more rivets.

These will be the hinges on the nose.

A student pointed out that these were too tall and wanted to remove them and trim them down; she did.

Short Friday will be a little less efficient today with out my swimmers and wrestlers who will all be at regionals.

Hopefully we can get more base coat down, and we can assign people to start scrutinizing close up photos for details.

If you've got close-ups of either 101st Airborne Medevac, or Marine One Whitehawk choppers, post them up for us.  We have very few close ups.  We won't get every detail.    It just isn't possible, but I tell the students the ore we get, the more believable it becomes, and the more people will ignore our flaws.

Update 2/15

Our former SRO officer stopped by today and told me he's been working on trying to get us a helicopter visit from the WY National Guard.  He's talked to several different people and they were even discussing dates.  He was surprised one of them had not talked to me since he visited with them.

He showed them pictures of the project and he said they were shocked st the size, scope, and that H.S. Students were doing it.  They thought we were making a small model.

Might be closer than we think to getting a real blackhawk to come visit us this spring.

More base coat painting today.

Transfers are ready for next week.

My friend (SRO-helped build the Stagcoach)agreed, that when we try to explain to people about the projects, they have preconceived ideas of fairly small, simple models, with the quality of a bunch of 1st graders.

When I first emailed the White House, I kept thinking, even if they do take the time to watch the youtube link to the past projects, their vision of what we will finish with is probably still based on those same preconceived ideas.  It's just natural for people to discount what the outcome will be.

I even see the look in faculty members here when I explain what we are making, and they've seen all the other projects in person.

It does make the reveal more fun, looking at the faces of people when they see it for the first time in person.   My wife only sees pictures most of the time and I see the same look in her face when she finally goes in to see it .

Update 2/19

Busy day, so the update is late.

We started detail painting the gloss black on the intakes today.

The intake bumps also got some paper mache.

More small details on the nose of Marine One.

More coats of base paint all around today.

These little guys also got more work done today.

We managed to get a couple windows tinted today.

Checking for fit.

Robotics working on the rollers for the sliding door.

Update 2/20

Tomorrow we may be ready to flip the fuselage back over right side up.

The Woods dept started the plaque presentation case for our Presidential letter.

The final windows were molded today to fit the door, then the students added some light tint to them.

We are going with a darker tint for the lower corner windows.

More and more details to the rocket sled.

Students measured out location marks for the flags.

We also blend the cowlings to the roof, as we've seen in our references.  New paint was added after some smoothing out where the flags will go.

Base coat is getting closer to done, and our landing gear cowlings are slowly finishing up.

For the plaque and letter, be sure to use cover glass with Extra UV blocking, seal the wood around the glass, put thin gasket around glass seat, go to metal shop, flush the area with as much nitrogen as possible while seating glass.

Or buy a frame with a valve and all that crap, the Enhanced UV full block glass is most important, nitrogen atmosphere would need to be renewed every few years, probably leading to it getting ripped, so maybe nix that idea, unless they want to install a discreet purge/fill valve.

I'd have to say that requirement to preserve an important archival document on display.  It's not every High School, or Teacher that gets a legit, hand signed personal letter from the President.  I hope you have it held flat in a non-humid environment, away from thieving types that "just wanted to show parents at home".

Moisture and oxygen feed mites and UV yellows paper.  It becomes tattered without any touch unless it's a pure environment of Nitrogen without excess dissolved water.   Most all paint sops or framing shops can cut you a piece of Block all UV glass (not just minimize it, like a car windshield).

Try Tru-View, might get a free sample for that if they get a photo of letter and link to newspaper article on it.

Info about why UV destroys everything from woodwork, paintings to books  Ozone is another bad thing, it's a super strong bleach in gas form)  They make/sell coatings for  standard glass you might get an approrately szied "sample" for.

Or, just order it from Tru-View on Amazon, if they turn you down on a free request.  Get it pre-cut properly if you can, there are lamination on it, making the normal scratch n snap method difficult.

Many sizes to choose from, Seems the price is around $50 as shipping charges go up and bigger ones get prime..

I'll get on the search.    There is a local store that might have it.  There used to be a framing store years ago that I know had it, but they retired and went out of business.

I might get resistance to having real glass in the frame due to safery and the possibility of breakage, but I might be able to have a film installed to minimize shattering.

Update 2/21

We worked to get our platform ready to support the fuselage while on top of the lift.

It also allowed us to flip the fuselage back over, right side up.

Time to work on small details, and a couple more coats of paint.

We are hoping to get the top painted white before too long.

Hopefully this afternoon, we will get the flags on the top and be able to put it back on the fuselage.

Alright ARFCOM, our printed model decals are not going to work.  The color just isn't intense enough, and the decals are too fragile at this size.

I need a set of American Flag vinyl stickers that are close to 6"x9".

Or!

We tried over the white.  It was just too thin, and our printer apparently sucks.

We may try just printing to quality photo paper, then gluing it on.  We did that with the flags on the Space Shuttle and they turned out pretty nice.   Probably what we will do again.

Best shot is buying a US Flag printed on white vinyl sheet instead of 3 layers of vinyl for red/white/blue.   For decals, call your local vinyl shop and ask for a quote, if you offer to weed it yourself, you'll get it cheaper, also if you provide your own transfer masking to lay down once the weeding is done.
