I specialized in aircraft firefighting.  The amount of heat in a horizontal aluminum tube was absolutely unbelievable.  I'd guess this isnt quite on that level, but much worse than a wooden structure fire.

If some mosque was burning somewhere, I am sure 90% of the replies would be genuine concern for the loss of historical artifacts and culture and definitely wouldn't be "I'll have a coke" or similar things, right?

Even if you aren't religious, the scale and beauty of these buildings is impressive.

I have been in Saint Patricks in NYC a couple of times. It was awe inspiring.

Interesting sidenote, someone (socialists) tried to blow that one up too. In 1913.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Sure it sucks losing the structure from a historical and artistic aspect but the thing is old wood structures catch fire sooner or later for a multitude of reasons, it's almost a circle of life type of thing.

Maybe it will give way to France pulling it's head out it's collective ass and coming together as a nation to rebuild a icon of Western Civilization....At least we can hope.

Had the chance to tour the Duomo di Milano in Italy, the cathedral was massive, hard to appreciate unless you are standing inside it.  The woodwork and masonry was incredible, knowing it was all done by hand was hard to imagine.  I think they said it took 400 years to build the cathedral in Milan and all it's surrounding buildings.

Notre Dame took 200 years to build.  It's hard for us to fathom that generations of craftsmen worked on those cathedrals.  People literally worked their entire lives and never saw the completed building.

they didn't work round the clock and frequently took long breaks as the funding came in with dribs and drabs. Actually the longer it took the better for the economy. The tradesmen the artisans would do numerous projects and sell their services in the off seasons and while funding was being acquired. This is why there are quite a few large cathedrals  in relatively small towns throughout Europe. Once the church was done the reason for the tradesmen, the artisans was gone and they left. They often left behind a small town that if it didn't have a renowned market would slowly shrink.

Imagine you were a worker inside and it was something you did...

Like cutting metal and spark catching some oily rags on fire/immediately getting out of control?

Imagine the guilt.

To give you an idea of the history...

When Napoleon coronation at Notre Dame took place, it was already 600 years old!

Napolean's coronation is incredibly recent in terms of Notre Dame's age. The amount of time between then and now represents less than 25% of the cathedral's existence.

It was built in 1163, one year after Genghis Khan's birth (or at least our best guess of his birth). Notre Dame predated Marco Polo and the founding of the Ottoman Empire by more than a century. It predates the creation of Islam. At the time of its construction, the best estimates for the global population are ~300 million (less than the current population of the United States). The cathedral was almost 200 years old when the Black Death destroyed a third of the world's population. The USA is currently younger than Notre Dame was when the Forbidden City was constructed in Beijing. It was 3 centuries old when Machu Picchu was built and Leonardo Da Vinci was born. It was over 400 years old when Shakespeare's Globe Theatre was built. It predated the original King James Version of the Bible by 450 years.

This photo actually provides some relief. The stone vaulting that makes up the ceiling of the cathedral has not collapsed, meaning it's possible most of the damage from the burning roof has not made its way into the actual church.

This is a photo of the top of a vault in Salisbury Cathedral, which was constructed around the time Notre Dame was with similar techniques. The piece of lumber you see in the top left of the photo is of a wood truss from the roof, the sloped structure taking up most of the photo is stone that makes up the interior vaulted ceiling.

It would end Macron's career (which isn't doing well anyway)

Acknowledgement of an act of terrorism would put LePen in (which woild be a good thing for France) or plunge the country and possibly all of Europe into open warfare. With the exception of a few Eastern European countries, everyone else has been dumped on by their governments for decades now. It would be a religious war with even nonbelievers joining in against a common enemy.

See if other historical treasures get their security kicked up a notch.

Regardless, this is one of the greatest losses in history. Just hard to grasp what is going up in smoke.

Yes . . . In fact, 3D CAD models of the entire structure have existed for some time.

In, theory . . . it could actually be 3D Printed . . . if you could build a printer large enough.
