My 11 yr old son and I went to the OKCA Knife Show in Eugene, OR on Sat. I believe it's the largest knife show in the US. 500 tables or so. We called it quits after 5 hours, having seen about 65% of the show. Pretty amazing.
We've gone before and I have plenty of knives, so I was planning on letting my son pick out a knife or two and mostly just wanted to look at knives and the historical displays and shoot the shit with knife folk. We scored pretty well. My son loves the Cold Steel Youtube vids . . and although I'm personally not a Cold Steel fan, I do remember the joy I had as a 11 yr old buying knives that only a young boy could love, so I didn't try to steer him different. He picked out a practically new Cold Steel Ti-Lite and a Cold Steel kukri machete. Both are pretty sweet in actuality. I like the Ti-Lite quite a bit. Also, knife guys LOVE seeing a kid with a passion for knives and they hooked him up. A couple of custom Queen/Schatt & Morgan guys gave him a "US Custom" stockman. Chinese made, from the same manufacturer as Rough Rider, but not bad. Lynn Olson of Lynn Olson Knives in San Rafael CA (http://www.myknifedealer.com/), gave my son a CRKT Crawford Kasper folding fighter, which is pretty badass. Gary Fadden, of Al Mar Knives gave him a little cheapo non-Al Mar slipjoint that will make a great tackle box knife. Gary is also a good friend and he gave me a Al Mar mini SERE, which is pretty sweet. But the cherry on the knife sunday was yesterday, when a package showed up in the mail - apparently I won a doorprize of a Coast Knives FX350 framelock knife. I think they sell for $25 or so, but still pretty sweet to have one show up in the mail unexpected. So 6 knives and a machete and we spent less than $60. Got to talk with good friends and saw a lot of really cool stuff. The Coast knife looks like this: So far I like it quite a bit. Big, sturdy framelock. G10/Zytel type handle. Will make a good backup camp knife to stash in the camp trailer. And of course, the Mini SERE is pretty badass - Japanese made, VG10 blade, similar in quality to tier 1 Japanese Spyderco stuff, if not better. I have a full sized one, too - as well as a full auto SERE made by Benchmade, but the mini is pretty cool. It looks like this: |

The knife was light in the hand and was easy to change directions with. It was a knife that could be carried daily and not be a tacti-cool type of folder. If he wanted to, I suspect he will sell several of them. Weather was interesting....Highway 91 and 39 ate ALOT of semi's and people who drove faster than the conditions allowed. No kidding, between the trip up and down we saw about 20 Semi's and about 25-30 cars/SUV's in the ditch. And by the ditch, I mean 20 feet or more off the road. We were going to stop and help the first couple cars we saw, but then a herd of Polar Bears led by a Yeti came out of the woods and ate the occupants of the stranded vehicles. We didnt stop after that. I had not realized Wisconsin was so close to the arctic circle (of death). Nature is scary. Originally Posted By Kuraki:
